I mentioned in a thread over at the General section that I had purchased a William Henry Clip Case for my Mnandi and I recieved several requests for pictures, so here they are.

This is a large clip case, if I had it to do over I would have purchased the medium sized one. My plan now is to remove the stitching and cut down the lip a little to leave about 1/4" more Mnandi sticking out.

On a side note, I don't know how many people have removed their clip but on mine the clip screw was just a scosh too long. So when I removed the clip I could not fully tighten the tail end again. Well, 1 e-mail to Bridget at CRK and she told me they would cut down a screw and have it out to me today... now that's service :)

Anyway, I thought I'd mention it so that you were aware going into it that this may happen. Don't know if it will be a common problem or not, if it is it'll be the first "common" problem I have heard from CRK. :)

It looks like this combination worked pretty well together. When you have completed the modifications to the clip case make sure you post pictures so we can see how you did.

I saw Chad's mention of this in the other post and emailed him that I've been recommending people to try out the WH's sheaths and asked him if he'd be kind enough to post a pic, looks good Chad!

Guys, be careful with those clipcases -- I have a couple of WH's with clipcases -- love them -- but I've found that they "break-in" and the knife can sit pretty loose in the case. With both my Kestral and my GS-07 I find that the knife can fall out when I sit. The Kestral has even "jumped" out of the case when I've chased the dog. Just my .02

I was going to do a separate thread on this, but anyway. I lost my Maple Leaf Umfaan today. Like an idiot I carried it in the medium sized William Henry Clip Case to be "discreet". I didn't notice it was missing until I got home from work.

Well, I tore back to work, worrying all the way. I had already asked a friend at work to look for it near my desk - no dice. My first stop was the rather large parking lot I park in. I drove straight to the space I had parked in today and saw it, lying decorated side down. It had been laying there for about 1.25 hours by that time. Fortunately, no one had noticed it. It is not marked up at all (it did scold me for not using my G2 case though!).

I really think the WH clip cases are cool, but they definitely "break-in". I'll not use mine again for my Umfaan; too much to chance. G2 all the way from now on.

William Henry does caution if you intend to use the Clip Case for any knives other than the ones they were designed for.

Yup. Twice last winter I lost a WH -- in the snow no less -- while playing in the yard with the dog. One problem with the clip cases is that even when the knife is lost, you still have a clip on your pocket and the bulk of the case -- it's very easy to not notice that the knife is gone.

I agree with you guys for the most part.

Luckily I'm fat and my pants are usually pretty tight so I don't have this problem much.

I carried a Boker Congress slip joint (limited edition no less :)) in one of these cases for 2.5 years and never had a problem.

I've been going to the G2 School of Fine Leather Work by reading his posts at the other forum and I'm currently working on a fitted belt sheath for it, so hopefully the WH case is an interim step.

I just think this knife deserves to be carried in a fine leather sheath and I can't stand the separation anxiety long enough to send it to Gary to have it done right.

Well, this is my second attempt at a molded sheath.

It's no G2 but it'll do until I can refine my skills a little.

It's actually dark brown but may look more like Oxblood in the picture.

Pretty Classy Chad! Nice work there, keep it up!

ps
I guess that the WH sheath isn't the ticket, though it depends on your carry style and what your activity would be when carrying it...the clip sheath I have from WH seems to work well but I can see where it can loosen up pretty quick and a knife slip out, so I'll stop suggesting those for now...

Gary, I am very interested in a dark coloured vertical sheath for my Small Wood Damascus knife, I intend to keep the clip on as well. Could you advise me as to options and prices etc?

Thank you.

Email headed your way sir...

Chad, those leather sheaths take a bit more time and effort than a Kydex one don't they? I have a kydex sheath for my Rob Criswell wharncliff fixed blade that he made, I wanted the knife to be inside a bit more secure and took a hot air gun and wow that is pretty easy to heat up and form, almost made me want to try making some kydex stuff! Hmmmm maybe I might, for fixed blades at least as I don't make fixed bladed leather sheaths, have to give that some thought!

G2

They definately take more time to do, at my current pace they take about 4x's the amount of time.

But don't sell Kydex short. It's relatively easy to make a sheath out of, but to make one that can be considered well done takes a long time to master. I threw away probably 30 sheaths before I got one that I would consider good enough to sell.

There's a very fine line between a paper weight and a nice sheath.

I like working with both but for different reasons. There are definately some knives that should have leather and some that should have Kydex though, so it's nice to be able to do both.

Let me know if you want to start doing Kydex and I'll give you some pointers :)

aaaaaaaahhhhhh the wait is KILLING me. mine should be coming soon, just not soon enough ;

A Mnandi or a G2 sheath?

Either way, it's always a nightmare waiting for something that much anticipated :)

It's weird, I shop for the best price and then pay through the nose to have it shipped fast :D
