anyone here own/use/love these knives?
really been jonesing for one

another ?
since there are so many knife makers on this forum
been wondering about the prevailing thought
that these types of knives
(not the chris reeve as its one solid piece)
but welded ones are weak at the weld
i do lots of welding
and in this realm it is considered
(the welded area that is)
to be stronger than the surrounding material
if done properly of course

I own three hollow handle knives.

CRK Mountaineer 1
CRK Mountaineer 2
Randall #18

The CRKs are amazing. Easy to sharpen, very tough finish, and are surprising comfortable in the hand because of the concave area behind the guard. Very few hollow handle knives have single guards, which makes the Mountaineers special, IMO. The Mtn. 2 has a more comfortable, larger handle, but I like the practical 4" blade on the Mtn. 1 better. Both are great knives with high quality sheathes. You can't go wrong with either.

The Randall is more old school. It is welded at the blade/guard and at the guard/handle. If you use the knife for its intended purpose, there is no way that it is going to come apart.

I was given a Mtn 2 as a gift and find the knife is very effective as a wilderness knife. Since I'm also trained in FMA I'm not as thrilled with the round handle as a sub tasked defensive knife which I always consider when selecting a wild/woods knife. While the round handle does store matches, a needle and some thread which is handy it has preventing me from using it as much as I'd like. However, the round handle works well for most other tasks.

But the overall blade profile works well for making triggers on snares, whittling shavings for a fire, and other wild/wood tasks. I think for me it is a good choice. I did once chip the edge badly while batonning some wood on a rock that was buried under some moss on a stump (look before you do this next time Quirt!). I sent it back and they gladly fixed it at no charge.

I know that Noss's knifetests site is a little overkill but the Chris Reeve knives always appear a little brittle in his reviews.

+1

I would have expected a 1/4" slab of tool steel to perform much better. My guess is a HT issue.

I have 17 CRK OPR knives and I highly recommend them. I have used many of the ones i have and cant say enough about them. They have great blade designs, are easy to sharpen, hold a good edge, very grippy handle, heavy duty leather sheat, etc. I could go on and on. To me, the greatest thing about them is that they were designed by Master Knife Designer Chris Reeve. They were made for 28 years and the only ones ever broke were from an idiot hitting them with a hammer. These are by far the best hollow handle knife you will Every Buy.......I highy recommend them.

Not to say they wouldn't break if you pound them with a three pound sledge but the hollow handle knives were not the ones that broke...or did I miss a hollow handle test?

I had the I and held the II. For me, if I had bought the II I would still have it. The I with 4 inch blade was VERY handle heavy and I did not like the overall feel of it. I did really like the feel of the larger Mountaineer II but never did pick one up. I sold the I and recently traded into a Project I....AWESOME knife is an understatement. It is big but well balanced and very well made. Can't say enough good things about the CRK one piece line...get em while you can. It is a shame they stopped production of these...

I have several of the one piece and really like them. The Mtn II (5.5") is my favorite of them all with the 5.5" Sable being a close second.
