Hi guys, gonna be shipping out soon and I want to get a good knife. I've been stuck between the Chris Reeve Pacific and the Spartan Ares and was wondering what your opinions on them are and which one I should get or if any of you might have any suggestions as to any other knives that may be good for a combat situation.

I personally like the Chris Reeve Pacific more because if needed I think it would make a better survival knife. I am also a huge fan of Chris Reeve. Just my two cents

Its pretty much a toss up I think. I like the look of the Pacific better, and the handle lookes a lot more comfortable. I hate the serrations though, main reason I've never bought one. Ares is slightly smaller and a lot lighter, so that would be helpful for rucking around.
Heard lots of good things about Spartan, but never actually been able to hold one unfortuately. CRK are of course great knives with a great reputation. You can search the forums for some discussions about how his knives aren't tough enough, but most of those are based on some really unrealistic tests and pretty stupid.

Interestingly enough, Chris Reeve really helped the two lads from Spartan get their production going. So if you buy a Spartan there is some CRK DNA in there as well.

I like both knives but the Spartan guys, who are really American heroes, could really use all the support they can get. Check out their bios here and you will see what I mean.........

I was lucky enough to meet them at Blade several times and they are great guys, run a great operation and make wonderful knives.

You really cannot go wrong with either.

Good luck with your choice.........Let us know haw you go.:)

I have owned both and in my opinion the Pacific is the nicest looking fixed blade knife made. That being said, I own 2 Spartan Blades Ares(S30V and S35VN). My Ares is my go to "blade and flashlight" in the drawer next to my bed. I dont think you can beat the Area for a fast/sharp/agile knife. The makers of the Spartan Blades are probably the most solid knife makers I have ever dealt with. I have both the Kydex and Canvas sheaths and although I like the speed Kydex, I think I prefer the extra security of the Canvas sheath.

When I saw their Phrike model I had a feeling there was some CRK connection. I really dig their designs and how they tacticalized (it's a word now) the clean CRK aesthetic while doing their own thing.

Hmmmm. Personally, I like the look of the new Spartan Harsey Hunter model better than either of the two you mentioned, but they are a bit more money. I am not a big fan of flat slab grips on any field knife, so if you only have the two to choose from, I would probably favor the Reeve for that reason alone.

The Spartan Ares knife is the sexiest looking high-quality fighting knife while Chris Reeve Pacific is a the ultimate survival knife. I have the CR Pacific and it's my go-to knife when camping, hiking, and hunting.
