Just picked up a Chris Reeve Project II. BNIB, papers, "birth certificate" etc. It's all there. I know I've read somewhere that Project 1, 3, and 4 are pretty easy to come by and 2 is somewhat hard to find. I can't seem to find any info on the value/rarity of this knife. I went to IKCA but it only says the rarity is 8/10 and will only give values to members.
Can any of you fine experts enlighten me on the real rarity and value of this knife? I know you guys know more than I do about it.
Thanks in advance from the Newbie.

EDIT after original post. I just read a post regarding asking about knife values etc. I was unaware so I went just now and bought a Gold membership to stay compliant.

I hope someone will help me now that I'm abiding by the rules. It was just an oversight on my part.
I wasn't really planning on selling the knife. I have a CRK Shadow 1 and love it. Been looking for another CRK from this line for a while now. I guess if I find out it's worth enough, I may part with it. I've had my eye on a new Busse.

They were a production knife so the word "rare" isn't really the right word I don't think, it's not like a one off custom or a run of 10 or anything. As far as CRK one piece knives go they are thin on the ground though. After they stopped making the OPKs pretty much all models went into hiding, be it into collections or folks just snapping up one more for keeps. You see OPKs pop up now and then but with prices that are frankly ridiculous. IMO the knife is worth more than you would have payed for it while in production but not several hundred dollars more. :)

I picked it up for 475. I'm probably wrong here but I think I read somewhere that they were 400 when they came out. If that's the case, I feel pretty good. Regardless of the value, I now have 2 CRK's and the more knives you have the better life is. LOL. I know if I keep the paperwork that it will never go down significantly in value. I'm just glad I found this model and could afford to add it to my stash.
Then again, if it turned out to be worth a 1000 or more, I could order a few custom Hansons and life would be even better.
Thanks for the info Haze

I believe they were $350 right before they shutdown production. $475 isn't bad considering how quickly they dried up and what people have been asking for them lately.

Hale Storm -- congratulations on acquiring a great piece of CRK history, and very well designed and robust tool. There are some members here that are pretty active OPR (One Piece Range) collectors and historians, and hopefully they will chime in. Here are my thoughts:
  • I know of (and have owned) a Project I and Project II. These have 7.5" blades, serrations near the hilt, and indexing for sensing orientation in the dark.
  • The PI is the spear point version, the PII is the clip point version.
  • I've never heard of a Project III and Project IV -- I'm not convinced that those exist, but if they do, I'd consider them very rare. ;)
  • I'll comment about rarity relative to the number of the items that are in existence, as opposed to value, current market demand, etc. There were more OPR knives sold in the 4" and 5.5" blade length than the longer knives. Some of the more popular OPR knives were the Shadow III and Aviator (4") and the Shadow IV and Mountaineer II (5.5").
I hope that helps. Here are a couple that I've recently sold:

That's not a bad price TBH. It's about as much as I would personally pay for that knife. It is indeed a cool knife and if you do keep it mint it will only go up in price as time goes by.

To give you an example of some silly prices I have seen skinners with asking prices of +$500 and a Mountaineer I for $425. That's just crazy IMO, you atleast got a good sized chunk of steel for your $475. :D:thumbup:

Thanks to everyone. I was pretty sure I couldn't go wrong at that price and it was good purchase for me since I wanted the knife (we all know how that goes right). I'll put this one away for my son when I'm gone. I'm young (48) and 40 years from now when I'm gone, he'll have a nice CRK to admire.

Hello Hale, I think u just bought my 28 year ANNIVERSARY CR off feebay..

Anyways I also think u are thinking about Chris Reeve Shadows.. The Shadow 1,2,3 and 4 (biggest is #1)
The PROJECT came in 1 and 2 with serrated edges though there was one without..

The SHADOW 2 has a 7" blade or so and is the lowest number of production vs 1,3, and 4..

The 28 year is the very lowest where i believe only 250 were made.. I wish Chris would have numbered them .. that would have been COOL!

Talk to u soon!

That's funny, I was just going to recommend you message dax0007. :)

Er yeah, roger that. In my case I trade. If I sold my knives I'd end up paying a bill or some such nonsense. ;)

I'm trading my 25 for a micarta Insingo. I'd love to keep the 25, but yeah, that ain't gonna happen. :(

YES!!! That was me. AND i just paid so of course I can't wait to get the knife here. LOL

Now I have TWO CRK's!

One of them is 1 of 250. SWEET!!!

I have a Chris Reeve Project II in my possession right now. I've been scouring for an idea of its value. I don't want to sell it, just want to get an idea of its worth. Any suggestion as to where I can find this info?

I purchased an early production Project I, serial #60, dated Feb, 1992 here on BF last year for $600. It had the original birth card, but not the original box. It is in a nice lightly used condition. I have purchased four other OPKs over the last couple years (Aviator, Shadow II & III and a Nkonka) from $475 to $800. You see most on eBay listed for $1200 to $2500, but don't seem to sell at those prices as they are constantly being re-listed.

I just picked up a nice used Nkonka (the spear point, no box or birth card) here on BF for under $650.
