I have been considering one of these two knives. They are about the same size, and the ZT costs a little more. Apart from blade shape, the major difference seems to be in the type of steel used, A2 for the CRK and CPM3V for the ZT. Does anyone have any thoughts on which way to go? (The purpose of the purchase is to send the knife to a soldier in Afghanistan.)

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

That's a great way to support a soldier. Whichever of these two knives you pick should serve him well.

Personally, I'm familiar with the CRK line and do recommend it. As Chris Reeve says, he got into making his One-piece line of fixed blades based on his dissatisfaction with what was available during his own army service.

A2 is tough. Besides CRK, Bark River and Mission use it extensively, and all three companies make real users, not safe queens. 3V is also good steel for hard use. I only have a small knife in it, though.

I am not familiar with the ZT. They look good and have an impressive pedigree. Everything else I have by Kershaw is excellent, so I trust their work, but I'll have to let others speak about this specific model.

I have a Shadow III and it is a great knife just like all my CRK knives. I would have no qualms about recommeding the Shadow IV form CRK. They stand behind every knife they make and your soldier can carry it with satisfaction and conviction that it will do everything a knife that size is supposed to do.

It would make an outstanding gift.

I have both the CRK shadow IV, is my personal last resort knife. Because of the hollow handle. The ZT 0100 is very comfortable with a great sheath and leg straps, Molle friendly! If your buddy is going to do more water hopping then land get him the ZT, better corrosion proof with S30V. Both blades are the perfect lenth. The ZT is a little wider and melts into the palm of your hand and a great slicer. You mentioned something about Afghanistan, go with the CRK Shadow IV or even the CRK Mark VI it's very similar ...the only difference is it's a clip point instead of a spearpoint.
Hoped this aided in your decision. GODSPEED for a safe return of your buddy and tell him thanks for his service to our great country!

What a great gift to your friend -- please thank him for us for his service and personal sacrifices!

Just out of curiosity, why aren't you comparing the ZT 0100 to either the CRK 5.5" Green Beret, or the 6" Neil Roberts Warrior? Those seem like a closer comparision, with no hollow handle. The S30V blade steel on these CRK knives would provide incrementally better corrosion resistance over A2.

Having said that, the Shadow IV is my camp knife now, and it's held up extremely well, in every way (read "abuse").

Good luck with your selections!
