The lockbar on my new chris reeve umnumzaan travels 50% to 90% of the way. The lockup seems more deadened than most knives, but that seems to be normal for this knife. The detent is also quite strong, which also sounds normal for this knife. Is it normal for the lock bar to travel well past half way? Thanks.

Welcome to the addictive world of CRK's jffielde,
Make sure you're not applying pressure to the lock bar when you open the knife. If it is new, it will require a break in period. I don't know if adjusting the pivot will help with the strong detent, but it will make it smoother once you get past the detent.
The Umnumzaan has a ceramic ball that locks the blade in place, even though it looks like it's way over, it's really not. The ceramic ball will make a mark on the blade where it locks at. Look at the flat part of the blade when the knife is closed. I'll bet it's around 50% of the thickness of the blade.

It is normal for it to be between 50% - 75% or more. As Ajack said, it is not the lockbar that contacts the tang, rather it is the ceramic ball on the lockbar that does. I would worry if it was less than 50%.

Look at it from this angle to see where the ceramic ball locks up:

I was squeezing the lock bar. Thanks. I'm fine with the slightly stiff detent anyway. No worries. Thanks for the info on the ceramic ball. I've never seen that before.

Your picture ins't working for me, but Corskin's picture shows a totally normal lock up, all my Umnumzaans and my 25 sit at about 50% and show a mark on the tang just like that. The lock bar itself looks as though the lock up is more like 80%, as has been pointed out already. :)

Your lockup looks identical to my 2008 umnum. The "deadened" lockup is a stealth feature that is produced by the o-rings contacting the slabs first, muffling the sound.

You good to go, welcome to the club.
