Is it worth investing into a Chris Reeve Mountaineer II and is it true that it is hollow handled??

ok Thanks another concern of mine is the leather sheath is this of good quality and if I sent him some extra money could he possibly put saw teeth on it ??

the leather sheaths are top quality. i have the shadow IV, which is identical in length to the small mountaineer I, w/ a slightly different blade shape and has a double guard.

the shadow IV comes with the pancake sheath as opposed to the simple pouch. i had a mountaineer with pouch, also a very nice sheath.

if you like serrations, look at the aviator, also very similar to the mountaineer, but the smaller version.

i dont think they will cut serrations for you in the production version, but you may be able to place a custom order.

alright thanks do you think that the shadow 4 would be a better alternative for camping/messing around in the woods this is the first time I have ever thought about a knife like this sorry for all the ?s

no problem, glad i could help.

i found the mountaineer II to be a bit large and not as versitile as the smaller blades. for utility purposes i prefer a blade between 3-4 inches.

for an allaround, the 4 inch models will do plenty. skin, carve, kp, etc. they wont chop well, but neither will the 5 inch models.

many feel a good camp knife should be in the 5-7 inch area.

for general utility, and since this is your first, i would recommend the 4 inch model, probably the aviator since you want some serrations.

The leather sheath is of excellent quality -- CRK sells a total package for the base price, which is more than I can say about other manufacturers. CRK does not put saw teeth on any of the one piece knives as specials. As Morimotom said, the Aviator is the only CRK knife currently available with a sawback. If you're interested in serrations on a portion of the cutting edge, indeed, CRK does do this special on one piece knives upon request.

BTW, I love the Shadow IV, currently my first choice as a camp knife. There are all sorts of folks that would say Sable IV (I used to be one), Mark VI, or Moutaineer II, but I like the tip weight and strength of the Shadow IV, as well as the on-axis spearpoint design.

btw, welcome to the addiction. get one, and you'll be hooked.

i have the green beret 7", and a large classic sebenza. planning on picking up a sable or mountaineer I as well.

didnt know that fooj, cool! maybe ill order a mountaineer I with some teeth!!!

Just wanted to support that if you are looking for top quality, Chris Reeve knives are great. I have the Mountaineer I. The leather sheath is very, very nice.

My amateur assessment: The Shadow series will have more weight forward, but in 5.5", this isn't going to do much in the way of chopping, etc. anyway. Should be a good cutter, though. The Sable series have a full width spine, so that would be better for a baton, I suppose, but the blade has less belly. The Mountaineer series knives have a nice belly on the blade for cutting.

So... yeah. For me, it came down to me thinking the Mountaineers looked cooler, so I bought that one. I also liked that it did not have a top guard like some of the other models do. I am also not a fan of the pancake sheath, which some sizes of some models have, but I know people that love the pancake sheath.

I don't think you can go wrong with whichever one you choose.

There IS a Chris Reeves forum here, under Manufacturer Forums.
I LOVE my Shadow IV! I want a Green Beret.

Chris Reeve Knives are top end and I have two Project 1 which is used by me and not in a safe collecting rust. The second is Green beret 7". In fact I recieved a little bonus and I order project 2 plain edge, and a sable 1. Any model you choose will serve you well as a collectable or as a user.

I called the shop and asked if they would put serrations in one of their knives and they said they don't do custom orders like that, otherwise I would have bought one that day. I want a 9" spearpoint with serrations. If they will do it let me know so I can start thinking about getting one.

In contrast to NOT putting a sawback on any knife upon request, CRK does put serrations upon request on SOME of their knives, not others. For instance, they will put serrations on any of their one piece (hollow handle) knives, on the cutting edge, near the guard (I have a 9" Shadow I with serrations, so I'm confident that they will do that special). They will NOT put serrations on a Neil Roberts, so if you want them on one of their military range, you need to buy the Green Beret knife.

Morimotom -- I bought a Mountaineer I with serrations for my brother. He loves it! Hope you like yours too.

Best regards,

Fooj
