I am going to purchase a plain large sebee in the near future (Within the next two months.) I am going to use the knife as an EDC and usser. I have thought about a used knife, but most of the ones I have seen are made of the BG-42 steel. Are there any advantages of the newer steel; as far as edge retention ? I called the Chris reeves knife company and was placed on the waiting list. Wait was said to be about 2 months. What do you guys think about my question ? Would a knife made of BG-42 go for the same amount of money as the s30V Scratches on a knife would not bother me.

You should be able to find a used Sebenza on one of our Exchange forums for a few bucks less, whether BG-42 or S30V. As a user, it will pick up a scratch here and there and the handle will scuff. No harm in that; mine looks used. :D

BG-42 (and ATS-34 before that) made for some great knives. Chris Reeve helped develop S30V as an improved knife steel, but the improvement is incremental, not revolutionary. They are all good steels.

I have a small Classic with S30V steel. I don't see any huge advantages with the new blade material compared to the BG-42.

Since they're not cheap knives you might as well spend $60-$70 more and just get a new one.

I had a problem justifying spending over $300 for a pocket knife but I have never regretted buying a Sebenza. They are worth what they cost in my opinion. I would much rather have one great knife than a drawer full of run-of-the-mill knives.
