Hi,

I am trying to decide between the Chris Reeves Green Beret and possibly a Strider LD Drop Point (as it is in stock locally) and was wondering what your ideas are between the two, and indeed any other suggestions are welcome. I would like a knife that is strong with a combat capable profile as I may be serving in the future. Between the two as far as I can tell they are made of the same steel, however the Chris Reeves serrations could serve as a weak point. Both are well heat treated I would imagine, and apart from one or two issues with the man behind the company most people do not have a bad word to say about Strider. The concern with the Green Beret was the destruction test on youtube. I do not need a survival specific blade as I have the Fallkniven F1 in a custom kydex case with Tek-Lok and an attachment for a firesteel so that is covered. Please can you let me know the pros and cons of each of the above knife and if you have any you would prefer let me know what they are and why. I would like to order one next week. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Well....

I guess I'll ask it before someone else does: what do you want it for?

Just to own and fondle from time to time (not that there's anything wrong with that)?

Or do you plan on using it for a specific task?

If you don't like serrations, have you considered Busse? You can get a NMSFNO direct from the store still. No sheath, but that's another story... :p

Firstly I would like to own and fondle with it from time to time as I am a knife enthusiast, but I may also serve in the future so I would like it to be functional for combat. An Applegate Fairbairn would be perfect as a combat only tool so I was initially considering the Boker Applegate Fairbairn 5.5, but of course it is restricted to only combat, whereas the Strider or Chris Reeves are functional for general use as well. It is not a must though, as I have the Falkniven F1 which I currently use as a bushcraft tool, leatherman for general bits and pieces, and a whole host of other less sturdy blades. I am basically looking for an aesthetically pleasing, functional knife, that is capable of being used for combat. I currently have a Sheffield Knives combat blade but it is not very aesthetically pleasing and is not up to the same quality as the Strider, Chris Reeves, or AF. I am finding it hard to find comparisons between the quality of the Strider and CRs, am I right in thinking its just down to personal taste or is there something between them I am missing?

I don't think you can go wrong with either of those for that purpose.

Personally, I don't like the cord-wrapped Striders and feel that one can do a bit better for the money.

As for CRK, I like the Pacific the best of their fixed blades. The Project I one piece is another fine combat knife.

I would definitely look into Busse blades. They have two excellent options available right now direct from the company - the skinny ASH and NMSFNO.

Either of these will undoubtedly serve you well.

Thanks for your input. The problem with the Busse is I am in the UK so it would be wildly more expensive to get hold of something like that due to import fees whereas the Green Beret and some Striders are locally available. I think maybe the Green Beret is a better idea than the Strider as I was also concerned with the para cord grip. I will most likely order the Green Beret and a Böker AF 5.5, although comments are always welcome before I take the plunge.

Hey, I'm in South Africa, so we're in the same boat, but at least your currency is worth something. :grumpy:

You should definitely take a look on the Exchange before you jump in. You will find many a good deal there and some of those gents will even be willing to ship abroad.

I know its more admin but you can get a very good deal, like I said before.

There are ways to get around customs, but we're not really allowed to talk about that here.

However, if you prefer to avoid the hassle, I would think the GB is a very solid route to go.

If you have been around knives enough to know what CRK and Strider have to offer then you should be able to make this decision on your own. IMO.

I didn't know your currency was as effected as ours. The pound to the dollar used to be great but now its just depressing. Due to past experiences with UK customs it can be rather expensive to import although I will look into my options if I consider bringing in a different brand/model.

I have never owned either so am finding it hard to make the decision. My instincts would be to get both but my wallet wouldn't support that, especially if I am also to get the Boker AF 5.5

For the most part, neither knife can be called "custom".

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Sorry I realised I posted in the wrong section but haven't yet figured out how to delete this post..

A moderator will be along soon to move it to the right subforum. You can't delete stuff you've posted. You could edit out what you typed, but the thread will still be there.

Our currency has lost about a 3rd of its value against the US$ in the last year. Which sucks big time if you're a knife freak...

If possible, also try the knives out. If you have a dealer who you can visit then just get a feel for the knife 'in hand'.

The one that feels best in your hand and 'speaks' to you, is the one to get.

Thank you. I have posted the topic in the correct section now so if it could just be deleted that would be great. Once again sorry for posting here.

Unfortunately none of the above knives are local enough for me to get to. Seeing as nothing is really made over here in the UK when I say locally I mean in the country :(

We do not delete things here other than spam or stuff overly offensive.

I will merge this with your other thread.

Bit confused here .... you say the GB and some Striders are available locally, but are not in the country?

I meant they are available locally as in within my country, not local enough for me to physically travel to ie in a different city.
