I just received the first two copies of what I spent the last year and a half on, and here is one of them:

Congrats Ken, that's totally cool and something I can't even imagine undertaking! Good work.
Happy holidays!

Here is a photo of it with the first edition on the left, along with abligatory Busse content (and the Chuddy Bear sheath that arrived in today's mail):

Here is another view of the second edition with one of my NMSFNOs:

THAT looks entirely too thick for me to try and read.....do they have it on CD?
Well, you're in luck. The book will also be available in electronic form, as a PDF file. When I supplied the final form to O'Reilly Media about ten days ago, I provided two PDF files. One was for the printed book, and included registration marks. The other is the online version, and includes an interactive TOC and index. As soon as the printed book is listed as being in stock, my publisher's web page for the book will list the PDF version as available. It's an 8.5MB file. In addition to being its author, I also typeset the book, and also made its 26-page index.

The first edition was 1,128 pages, and because the second edition ended up with less pages, 900 to be exact, I was expecting a thinner book. Not true:

Using my handy dandy caliper, I measured the first edition at 1.72 inches thick, and the second edition at 1.88 inches thick. Of course, I measured at the spine. ;)

One of the greatest joys for me today was to show the book's dedication page to my wife and daughter. I intentionally kept it from them, because I wanted them to see it for the first time while holding a real book. It is page "v" of the frontmatter. Here it is:

I will be sending a copy to my parents so that my mother can read the same thing.

Congratulations Ken. That's a lovely dedication. What's the significance of the blowfish on the cover?

I believe O'Reilly computing books typically have some animal drawing on the front. I have owned a few and they all have a similar cover aesthetic/format.

Good job Ken!
