Well, as some of you may have seen in some of my recent questions, I'm working on a folding knife for my mom.

My plan is to take a folding knife kit I got from Jantz (the peanut knife) and remake the blades so they're my own, then handle it with some mother of pearl. Having gotten the kit and done some thunkalating (professional term) I'm considering changing the kit to a one bladed knife. So, we'll see how it goes...

The kit, the 1084 I'm making the blades (or blade...) from, and a sharpie (the important part)

Blade thickness is .074"

Steel thickness is .143"

First I do some cutting with the bandsaw. You might think I'm using the cutout for the blade, but for once I'm thinking ahead, and leaving the part I want attached to the bar for a handle. Making the cutout means I have less metal to grind thickness off of.

Heres where I started

Thinner

even thinner

Blade partially shaped, and that's as far as I got tonight. I hope to get a little in tomorrow.

Okay, not advancing quickly, as I am trying to finish two edc's for a customer before christmas (this project will likely end after christmas, but it's all right, my family is used to gifts being late); but, I still did advance a little last night.

Hole marked and centerpunched. No, I didn't mark the hole with a big sharpie dot, I put the sharpie approx where the hole was, then marked it with a scribe, sharpie lets me see it easier.

Drilled out with a #50 drill bit; exactly .001" to small for the pin stock, so the pins will be slightly sanded to fit.

Shaping some more, I'm using mainly files for this as I want it to go slow and carefully

DSC07461.jpg

Shape finished except for rear curve, which will get done when I cut it off the bar (after I do bevels and such).

That's all for now, thanks for watching (and advising) guys. Stephen.

Well, devastation has struck.

I heated it with my o/a torch and chiseled my s. I purposely made sure not to quench it while it was still hot, I didn't want it hardened yet.

DSC07464.jpg

Then I went to start filing the bevels, I noticed the area near the seemed hard, thought it was odd and decided I should stop and make sure it was tempered back as far as I could, just to be sure (although there was no way in my mind it could have gotten hardened). Took a few more strokes with the file, and it popped off right at the file guide. AAAAHHH! Somehow, I don't know how, it got hardened. So now I have to start over...

Okay, I got off of class early, so I had some free time, and because the epoxy was curing on my other knife-in-progress, I had time to work on this project. So I'm nearly back to where I was. And to prove I really did something, I have a few pics.

Now that I have a bandsaw, I like to cut corners :D

Just to show how it'll look, the thing put together with one blade, in the manner I plan on doing it.

Right!
Here we are, I finished the two edc's a guy wanted for christmas gifts, so we're done with that. Thus, this is my main project now. Yay!!

Filing bevels, you know what's best for that? A filing cabinet

I apologise for my pictures, but the lighting is never how I want it.

As of now unfiled.

(hopefully) shows how the bevels are coming along.

The S chiseled in, and this time after chiseling I made sure to heat it and leave it in the forge to cool slowly.

And before going any further I decided to cut in the nail nick, as I didn't want to wait till later only to ruin it.

How I set it up. I took a dremel cutting disc, chucked it in the drill press, and set it to be at just the right hight (I believe it was somewhere in the proximity of 0.093" high for me.

DSC07530.jpg

Then I taped off on either side of where I wanted the nial nick, and marked where I wanted it.

DSC07532.jpg

Then I (oh so carefully) cut the nick where I wanted it. and was relieved and over joyed to find it had worked. (By the way, I also tested it 5 different times before doing the blade to make sure it worked like I wanted it to).

DSC07535.jpg

After that I sanded the blade up to 320 grit

Then came HT

Cut, but still doesn't fit

DSC07546.jpg

Should fit now...

DSC07548.jpg

Thats it !

Glued and clamped

DSC07550.jpg

I'm off work tomorrow, so more progress then... Stephen

This is what I got done yesterday, looks like it won't be late for christmas after all

Glued and still squared.

DSC07554.jpg

Edges shaped.

DSC07555.jpg

DSC07556.jpg

Holes drilled, for the most part no problem. I had some chipping for one hole, but it was shallow enough it came out.

DSC07557.jpg

The chipping

Partially pinned, the other pins are for the spring and blade, so they come later.

DSC07559.jpg

all the pieces parts, ready to get finished up.
DSC07560.jpg

test pinned to see how it looks.

DSC07561.jpg

DSC07562.jpg

Now for shaping the handle

DSC07563.jpg

DSC07564.jpg

In between here and there I hand sanded the blade to 400 grit. But I forgot to grab any pics.

Once I shaped the handle the way I wanted, I pinned it all together. I peined the pins on the bolsters, but most definetly not the one on the mop.

DSC07565.jpg

DSC07567.jpg

DSC07569.jpg

Now I sand down the pins and hand sand the whole thing.

DSC07570.jpg

DSC07571.jpg

DSC07573.jpg

DSC07576.jpg

DSC07577.jpg

evenly sanded to a nice high grit.

DSC07578.jpg

DSC07579.jpg

Now buffed. It's hard to get the beauty of the pearl on camera, especially in bad lighting like my shop had last night. I'm gonna try to get some good pictures today after work.
