My wife has said she will get me a sharpening system for Christmas. I have a work sharp guided field sharpener and am going to step up a little.

I thought about the work sharp tool and knife sharpener with the belts. IS this the best way for me to start without asking her to spend too much? Is therea better more sonsistant, esier to learn system for about hte same price?

If price is a big constraint, then you can either get a good dual grit bench stone or a lower-end guided angle system. I got the Lansky one, but there are other options (e.g. Gatco has more angles to choose from).

If you want consistency, then a guided system is the way to go, unless you're very good with your hands.

If you like the Field Sharpener, their Guided Sharpener with the Upgrade kit, is a nice step up... works basically the same, but you get a better base, bigger and more variety of stones, and compliments what you have now.

As for the belt system... i'd recommend the Ken Onion version, if for no other reason than variable speed. But you also get bigger belts, a better angle guide, and a few other improvements... makes the cost difference totally worth it IMO. Their original version is OK, but it runs at a pretty fast clip, and uses relatively small belts... easier to mess up a knife without a bit of practice.

And eventually, if you can swing it, (don't need it right off), the Blade Grinding Attachment makes it a pretty versatile system.
