Long story short, my brother ordered two of the same knives a while back. The knife was a Kabar BK2, which has a value of about 70 bucks. He is going to be giving me that for Christmas...

I wanna counter react with another knife for him... I am more into folding knives, hes more into a straight blades. The BK2 will be my second straight blade knife.

Does anyone have any recommendations on $70 folding knives? He likes larger knives. So I think a beefier knife is preferred. I think I'd like to Stay away from Spyderco, only because my Dad & I are both Spyderco guys & want to give him something different.

I was thinking on the lines of a Kershaw Junkyard Dog 2, but its about $80 and probably closer to $95 shipped. Any other Kershaw knives you guys can recommend?

The Kershaw RAM is a neat folder that fits within your price range. I got mine for $70.00, including shipping. It's not exactly huge (blade edge just a hair over 3 inches), but the flipper and locking mechanism are fun and addictive to play with. The G-10 overlays on the handle look and feel good. The only thing I had to do to mine to make it better was to pry up the pocket clip just a bit so I could draw it faster from my pocket. Out of the box, the tight clip and the textured G-10 it snaps against made it difficult to draw with thick jeans on. The hollow ground blade came crazy sharp, and the lockup is very good with no blade play. The other Kershaws I have are the Skyline and the OD-1, which are also both good knives, with the Skyline retailing for around $35.00 and the OD-1 coming in around $45.00 or so. But I like the RAM just a little bit more than either of those.

Maybe a Recon 1? If youre set on kershaw maybe a tremor? Yeah, not in your price range, but its a big 'un

The junkyard dog you are picturing is the composite model, which integrates CPM-D2 into the blade. this is a excellent blade steel, but there is a cheaper version that is 14C28N that will fit your needs well. I love 14C28N, becuase it takes a razor edge and holds it. that version of the JYD II will be about 50-60 bucks. if you are set on the composite version, then check out kershawguy's blems. they do not carry the factory warranty, but they will send you small parts as needed.

a regular (not composite blade) junkyard dog 2 is around $50+ s/h, the composite version should run about $80-$85 to your door.

have you taken a look at the cold steel recon 1 or the boker plus S2?

sometimes you can get ahold of a Benchmade Griptilian for around $70-$80, that could be a possibility.

You can always get them for like 60-66 new, just a lot of people don't know about the discount code and they end up paying much more for benchmades.

I suppose that would be true, I picked mine up for $108 even with 30% off from my local dealer.

Regardless of which steel configuration you get, this is a helluva knife. I have had mine for a couple of years and used it on just about everything I run into. I have the combination steel blade, but wouldn't have any heartburn at all with the 14C28 version.
That steel does take a mean edge.

The design is really sturdy, hand friendly, and is large and strong enough for heavier work. In short, it's a winner!

a fellow forumite called Kershawguy sells kershaws and ZT's for a pretty low price, I also got a JYD II CB blem from him at $50, $55 shipped IIRC

I think you got it right from the beginning with the CB JYDII, nice big folder with a cool looking blade and $55 to your door is an awesome price. 1595G10 SpeedBump is a nice knife, its on the bigger side, it is assisted opening, has lanyard hole and uses the stud lock, cost $55-ish with shipping.

Just my two cents, but while I probably would buy myself a blemished knife with no warranty if the price was good, I don't think I would buy such a knife as a gift for a family member.

Its not a huge folder but the Kershaw Blur is a great knife. You could even get the S30V model for around $80 (maybe even less if you shop around).

Hard to go wrong with a Spyderco FRN FFG Endura or Delica also the Kershaw JYD ii is a solid knife as well.

Blur is an excellent choice especially in S30V

Since he likes larger blades, the Ener-G 2 model 1745

Smaller and lighter knife but an excellent value Damascus Skyline

Or a non-Kershaw highest recommendation large Buck Vantage Pro

Most cold steel folders are big, beefy and proven. I personally EDC a pocket bushman, but the voyagers and the american lawman are also good and for $70,- or less.

Good gift idea. A knife is a great present.
