While visiting my family in Tennessee I found out my youngest brother has a small collection of knives. He's been intrigued by the stuff I've been cranking out, so it occurred to me I ought to give him one of my knives for a Christmas gift. Knowing him, I decided that the trench knife was the best fit for him. Only problem was I didn't have a sheath for it... so I'm making that now.

Anyone else want to show what you'll be giving to family and friends this holiday season?

My sister is big into our family history(as am I) so Im thinking of ordering some Bog Oak and making her a Sgian Dubh...

Just back from heat treating. A couple of knives for my friend and his girlfriend. Both 154cm.

For my dad and brother: a brace of sgian dubhs. My dad is left-handed and my brother is right handed, so these are mirror-images of each other.

My dad lives near the ocean, so I used white-lipped pearl for his (left. I also thought of using spiny oyster, but I thought the white looked better than the orange would have), and my brother is a physicist, so I used fiberoptic for his (right). Notice also that the maki was done in opposite directions on these.

The inside (worn against the leg) was done with hiramaki so it would be flatter and more comfortable, whereas the outside was done in modified hinerimaki with menuki.

The file work is also mirrored.

Both are 154cm steel, hand rubbed to 600 grit. Ito is gutted paracord over kydex (thanks to Wally Hayes for the idea). The turk's heads are leather.
All of my handles have been cord-wrapped lately, but I thought it would be cool to do this on sgian dubhs. I've seen a lot of these done with wooden handles carved to look like woven cord/reeds, so it seemed appropriate to do it with actual woven cord (I have a scramaseax in progress along the same lines).
I'm pretty pleased with how these turned out.

I am up to my eyeballs in Christmas goodwill this year! :) I think the count is at 12 pieces, some of them pretty elaborate for me anyway. I will post some pics when I get done in the next day or two.

I don't think I'll do this many next year, but I do enjoy making a few knives that you understand from the beginning that you won't be selling. It allows me to take some risks, stretch my skills and grow as a maker.

I made a couple of Loveless style knives as gifts, one with a titanium guard. Both pretty much firsts for me. Challenging but fun...I'll do it again!

They are sure to be very happy with those knives. They look very nice .
