Christmas haul

I got a couple things on my list, so I'm super happy.

I got a nice khuk from HI as well as a tanto from them. Lovely cutters. Sharp as all get out and stout for days.

My wife and daughter got me a Schrade manila folder balisong. Fun knife that isn't a trick flipper, but it's a solid knife. I have already cut off the latch and scored a witness mark so I know how to orient the knife by feel. I stitched together a quick sheath and I have been playing with it pretty much all day.

They also got me a Boker Minibar. I'm a huge pocket tool fan. A handy piece of steel that can pry, scrape, and open a bottle is always welcome. It even had a pocket clip. It's done box/toy freeing opening duty today.

In November I pulled the trigger on what were my Christmas gifts. Bought myself the following. Did not want to wait b/c I did not want the knives sold to somebody else.

1 - Boker SPECIAL RUN Applegate Ebony Tanto Fixed Blade Knife. One of of 199 pieces.
1 - Bradford Guardian 4 M390 - Black G-10 - False Edge - Stonewashed
1 - Armatus Carry Bradford Guardian4 Architect Sheath Black Carbon Kydex

This was the first year in a few that I did not receive any knives. I did give several out to family and friends. Gave my dad a buck 112, and an Opinel mushroom knife. Gave my two sister’s boyfriends spydercos. My younger sisters boyfriend got a tenacious and my older sisters boyfriend a dragonfly 2. They were both very happy. Merry Christmas!

My wife gave me this for Christmas and I love it:

You're on a dangerous path to the cult of the butterfly :D

I'm easily enabled, just like most knife knuts. I have been on a ZT kick the last couple years. As my infatuation with them cools, I can totally see a Benchmade in my future. If the aforementioned Cold Steel offering is a robust flipper of reasonable quality, I may snag one of those too.

I'm not a flipper. Flip it open, flip is closed. I work with my hands and value them too much to risk getting them bit due to a roll or throw.

That said, opening gifts at my in-laws with a balisong was kinda fun. They aren't knife people, but they indulge me.

I was pretty happy with my haul this year! I received a ZT 0640, a DMT Magnaguide sharpening kit, some hanks from a local maker. I purchased a few knives for myself, a Hinderer XM-18, a Spyderco Mamba, and coming in as the last knife purchase of 2018, a Massdrop Laconico Keen, which is an extreme violation of my personal knife-collecting "rule", but I got it on the Exchange, so it's waived on the slimmest of technicalities. LOL Merry Christmas, everyone.

I GAVE knives as gifts this year; didn't receive any.

My 5 year old daughter got an A.G. Russell Hunter's Scalpel neck knife, with that great Blackie Collins sheath and a Boker camping set. (free with a certain level of order at BladeHQ) Also, one of those Mini-Snip scissors that folds right up.

My mom got a small Spyderco Paring knife. 3" wharncliffe blade.

My brother got an A.G. Russell K-31 with the kydex neck sheath.

I lost my Spydiechef on Christmas Eve. :-( I think it fell out of my pocket while I was running/swinging around playing with my daughter at the park. I scoured the place later, but didn't find it. I hope whatever little brat picked it up gets a good bite from it, for karma's sake.

I gave my brother a Buck 110 with a custom QuickDraw sheath. He loves it and has been playing around with it all day.

I gave my son a CRKT Fossil. He lost his Kershaw Knockout at a concert and says this one will be a great replacement.

My ol lady got me a Kizer Intrepid. It's damn nice. I've flipped it a lot and used it a lot. Broke in nicely and operates smooth as glass. She also got a hat embroidered for me with "Knife Knut". (She even spelled it right!) She knows me so well. :D

I wanted to try something new for my backup slipjoint so I went modern traditional and got a Benchmade Proper. Also got an excellent deal on a ZT 0452 that I’m really happy about.

Brutal. That sucks. Maybe put up a couple of flyers near the park offering a small reward? I would. Maybe $50 and later $100. Hopefully you get it back.

I had a great albeit very strange knife Christmas....

My wife and kids bought me 3 great knife books, a Leatherman Squirt and the small Spyderco Clipitool (the dual blade one with a knife blade and bottle opener/flathead blade). I was very happy as they picked them by themselves and mom ordered. Both will be used a ton and will never be sold.

Coolest thing ever though was that tonight my father in law (82yo and a lifetime farmer) gave my wife some cash and as he knew of my knife hobby (obsession?), he asked me to go online and order any knife I wanted.... RIGHT NOW.

He gave her a few hundred bucks or more (he inherited some well deserved $$$ recently from a relative he drove around for years for Dr. appts) so I ordered a sweet Spyderco Military with Titanium scales for about $150USD on Boxing Day (Dec 26 - Canada’s Black Friday). :)

He caught me looking at CRK and Hinderer in my wish list on one of my favourite retailers but I couldn’t bring myself to go there. I initially settled on a <$100 Sprint Dragonfly but he slapped me and “made” me buy a “bigger” knife. So titanium Military it is.

So a bigass Military in Titanium is coming and I couldn’t be happier as it was bought by a guy that missed his brother’s wedding as he had to milk the cows.

BTW, he used cheap folding knives for decades until they were toothpicks.... then he threw it in a toolbox or drawer and bought a new one.

Thanks for listenening. ;)
