Hey all,

I'm looking to replace a knife that I lost when I was younger and dumber. Dad's not really a knife guy, but still always has a Victorinox folder on him. He's getting up there in age, so doesn't camp much anymore. This knife will mostly be relegated to package opening I imagine, but I'd still like to get him something nice.

Not really looking to spend more than $100, again since this will probably be a package opener.

I've got it narrowed down to a ESEE-4, a BK2 or maybe even a BK7, but really can't decide between them (they are all within $25 of eachother, shipped).

Little help?

Thanks!

All 3 of those knives would do a very poor job of opening packages.

A quality folding knife with one-handed opening would obviously be much better.

Are you buying a knife for him, or are you just buying knives that appeal to YOU?

The knife I lost was a fixed blade knife. Why would these do a poor job of opening packages?

The BK2 and the BK7 are way too big, heavy and unwieldy for opening packages. Your Dad probably won't use them because of the inconvenience.

The ESEE-4 isn't as big, but it's still overbuilt because it's intended as a knife you can rely upon for hard use in a deep wilderness environment.

A Spyderco or Benchmade folding knife or similar would be easy and light to carry, and would actually work better at opening packages because of the thiner, smaller blades. Your Dad could carry it all the time too (and think of his favourite son when he carries it :)), rather than leaving it in the garage

A small lightweight fixed blade might also be a good choice, but I think the ones you've picked are way too hefty for the intended use.

Package opening...get a good folder. Benchmade Mini-Griptilian or similar. The vic SAK he has now is ok but a Mini-Grip would be very well liked, versatile, built well, compact, light, has a pocket clip to go anywhere do anything and one of the best locks around.

Those other knives are big and designed along the survival, camping, bushcraft approach.

Eskabar or Izula with added micarta scales or an Izula II (longer handle) would work well for a wide range of duties and they're small & light enough to drop in a pocket.

My father passed away in 1993. As long as I could remember, he either had a Buck 110, some model of a Case, or some Schrade model on him. He was a farmer & home builder, so needless to say, I was afforded the opportunity to see these knives perform while I was growing up. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these. Good luck, & welcome to the forum.
Be safe.

You know what's a good, light, thin, fixed blade, knife that's good for opening packages (I use it a lot anyway) a Mora. Pretty reasonable too. $20 - $30.
Easy to sharpen too.

Just an idea.

For opening packages and other chores around the house, you cant beat a CASE desk knife for a fixed blade

Its slim and elegant and it has the kind of traditional look of yesteryear (which your father might appreciate) its a beautiful peice and it can be had for under 100 bucks with natural bone handles or stag. The sheath is a great brown leather. And it comes from case an old and established knife brand that your father might be familiar with.

Of the knives you mentioned they are great knives but they are for use in the outdoors and military setting not really at home with household chores. But if your set on a hard use knife, i believe ESEE to be top notch for the price

I second the notion of a smaller fixed blade. Becker BK-11, BK-14 or ESEE Izula would all be great for what you describe. Be a sport and throw in for some micarta scales and you're golden.

ESEE Izula, I own 2 of em. I use them for EDC and around the house chores, they kick ass at everything I've used them for. Haven't taken em camping so I don't know much about the abuse level but if they're anything like the rest of ESEEs knives I'm sure they can take a beating.
