I want to get the guys in my department each a pocket knife this year. I don't want to spend a ton of money but i don't want to get them crap either. i was thinking about an opinel but i don't think they would appreciate the simplicity. I also thought about spyderco grasshoppers but they are a little small. I could up my budget but they aren't really knife guys so i don't want to go all out. I have 4 people to buy for and i want to spend around $100 total.

Case Sodbuster
Vic Cadet
Buck 110
Buck Bucklite
Spyderco Byrd
Kershaw Sweet
Kissing Cane Slipjoints
Buck Slipjoints
Smatchets. :D

how about a VIC Classic, or some other SAK?

you can get various sized lots of various SAK's on ebay...

or gerber curve...they can be bought for reasonable prices online.

I don't think you can go wrong with some model of SAK. They are good quality, so no-one is going to think you've given them a cheap gift. They will last a long time. They are non-threatening. They come in lots of handles styles, some of which are quite classy. Finally, they are genuinely useful. I don't use my SAK's every day, but there isn't a wekek when I haven't used them a few times.

At "around $100" for four knives, I would go Kershaw all the way. Get them Chives or something similar. They are the best bang for the buck out there, imo.

Engraved Vic Farmers all the way!

Not that Classics or Cadets are a bad choice...

But its easier to personalize the Alox variants...

just my .02...

Victorinox Pioneers. They have a very usefull set of tools, a good length blade, they're easy to carry in the pocket, they look good, they're simple and they are really tough. I've been carrying a Soldier (same knife but w/o the key ring) going on two years with no problems and I can say it's now my favorite knife. You could also get thier names engraved on the handles.

spyderco byrd line are good quality. someplace online had kershaw grooves for $30. and they are awesome

Ontario RAT-1 folders? At around $25 a pop I can't think of many folders that can beat them... I know that's just my opinion but I've been very happy with mine and the multiple people I've given them to have equally been happy, particularly those who aren't "knife guys."

Kershaw has a bunch of models priced less than $25, as well as Victorinox. Buck Vantage select is also within this price range.

Personally I'd give them Victorinox super tinkers.

What do you think about going to my collection and giving out a few of my lesser enjoyed models? I have a few that i like but i wouldn't miss in the least.

KC does also have a deal on the kershaw od-2 right now. i own a few other kershaws but i don't know about giving out a flipper knife. they also have a combo edge byrd cara cara 1. I do want to give them a more modern folder. I like the SAK idea but i always have a high end folder in my pocket, i think a lower end folder by a good manufacturer might be the way to go.

Nothing says, "I appreciate your help ever so much..." Like a Sebenza or an XM18 flipper with pond water scale...Right? :D

I went for the partially serrated Cara Cara 1s that i found on sale. I'll sit on them until the holidays now. thanks guys

Since you mentioned Opinel, how about a Douk-Douk? I would also second the Buck Vantage Select.
