I always try to make a few knives for presents; people enjoy receiving them and I like taking a "relaxed" outlook on making them. Both these pieces have flaws that, were they present in my "standard output" would have forced me to throw them through the wall :). Well...not quite, but making knives can be very frustrating, especially when I'm striving for a perfect knife. These knives were made with a much more laid back approach, which was a well needed break.

I'm only going to post photos of two of the presents, but the others are pretty much the same. I think the new owners will get a kick out of their new knives, even though they're probably expecting them.

The first is for my father in law. Personally, I do not like damascus (at least the damascus I make); I prefer hand rubbed finishes, buy my father in law thinks damascus is the bee's knees. I forged the blade from o1 and l6, 384 layers, ss guard, and desert ironwood handle. Blade length is 7.25", OAL 11.75". There is a bad weld on the other side of the blade, just another reason why I dislike damascus :).

I made a very similar fighter in 1065, but did not take a photo.

Next up is a small puuko. I did not make the blade, it is a Lauri. I have a nearly identical blade I forged and ground, but I did not have the patience to finish grind it, so I ordered a few pre-fab blades. I am actually quite impressed with Lauri's products, their finish isn't very good and the grinds are not even, but the HT, geometry and edge are great. For $15 it's hard to beat. The handle is curly koa.

The sheath is clearly a Roberts' creation :).

I also made another puuko but will not bore everyone with another shot.

Happy holidays everyone.

You have a very lucky father in law Matt. I like everything about this one but I love that blade, mortised tang?

That is a gorgeous Damascus knife...... this is the third time I've had to surf back in and stare !!

Cheers,

Carl

Thanks for the compliments guys :).

Dave, the handle is mortised. I'm using a mill and a disk sander, polishing, then "carving" slots and relief work. The mortise is invisible, the knife is already wrapped, but I'll take another photo for you.

The first photo was taken in the only sunlight I've seen in a week, it's been pretty dull and drab here. It's supposed to warm up beyond freezing today and tomorrow though ;). If we get some better lighting I'll take a better photo when the knife is unwrapped.

That's great of you, but you didn't have to get me a Christmas present. :D

Love that damascus piece --
