Christmas Project...

I was looking for a Christmas present type of knife that I could give to family members. I have done several little 'utility knives' that serve as great little box cutters, etc. For those that cut a lot of boxes as part of their jobs, they wanted something that would stand out. This led to the first damascus versions etc.

Well, I always liked the Blind Horse Snap Knapp, and this style solved the problems of trying to have a knife and a sheath on a keychain and keeping it secure. I wanted it shorter though, and so I fit the style to my typical 'two-finger' size for this knife. I used low contrast 1075/1095, 1084/1095 damascus practice billets I had laying around. Basically what I would call tidbits or scraps.

Forged to shape, and then cleaned up with the grinder. Purposefully was a little sloppy with the hammer work. I have actually gotten pretty smooth, but i wanted a primitive appearance. The colored one is heat colored from back to front to maintain the tempering. You can actually see a quench line... I also did a flat hammered/ground version that was very thin in the blade, but forgot to photo it. These are all shallow convex ground, ans are plenty sharp. The flat grind was the true slicer of the bunch. Leather is mahogany (like all my stuff, I need to get some different dye, but dang I like this color...) and finished in typical manner. The dark line on the front is from my edging tool with mink oil. It went away after drying obviously.

I hope L.T. and Dan don't think I'm stepping on any design toes. I have no intention at this point to sell these. I simply made them as gifts for Christmas for family members. I made five total, and each one took an evening to finish, so nice quick little project.

Thanks for looking. Quick and dirty cellphone pics... on the work table of the trusty old 2x42 which still finds constant use in my shop.
