Hi, I was wondering if anyone has the limited edition Commander/CQC7B because I just got a new set and I was wiping the Commander down and I noticed that the Commander has some scratch marks along the side of the blade. If I look at the bottom part of the blade near the edge, there's a whole series of vertical marks which look like to be caused by machining of the blade. The part above that has marks going horizontal. It looks like the layer of chromium nitrate applied wasn't think enough to hide the machining marks on the blade. Does anyone have a chromium nitrate Commander that looks like this? Would I be able to send it back to Emerson to get it refinished? Thanks.

Here's a pic to help you all out:

Thanks.

Looks like one that got by QC. (seems to happen a lot lately) Mine doesn't have the
'scratches' but I have a 'rare' lagriffe with the edge unground! (another rarity created by poor QC.)

Now that you mention it, one of my sets has that look also.

Guys,

These just seem to be grind marks. I personally think they look nice...that is if the knife is ground well. I personally prefer to see grind marks on the blade than a flat, characterless finish. In fact, when I saw the pic posted above, I immediately ordered one because it looked lke such an attractive produciton blade.

If anyone remembers the Al Mar SERE series, these knives had beautifully ground blades with attractive precision grind lines. A characteristic that raised the quality in production knives.

These are not "scratches," but rather indication that the blade was precision ground.

Reagan, thanks for responding. If by saying that they might be grind marks, would they all have to be parallel to each other? The marks on the top portion of the blade are not parallel to each other like in the bottom part. The upper portion marks just seem to be horizontal marks that seem to be random, but all are going horizontal to the blade. Hope this helps out more. By the way, I contacted Emerson and they said to send the knife in and they'll check it out.

Hey nightglock. I have a CQC-7 with the same markings. By the way what did you use to take that picture?

Nightglock,

Do these markings go the length of the blade? Or are they short, and numerous? Many knife makers ue a lower grit grind wheel on the flats of the blade to produce a two-tone satin finish. And usually this lower grit grind does not produce parallel markings. you can see this on JSP and Hartsfield blades. It looks kind of like brush marings. So if the markings go for the length of the blade, this is probably the case. If not, I guess it's best to get an answer from Emerson. Good Luck and keep us posted!

Reagan, the markings on the upper portion of the blade go just about the entire length of the blade. I'm sending it off to Emerson today and they said I should have it back in 2-3 weeks. I'll definitely keep you guys posted.

arkhamdrifter, I took the shot in macro mode with my brand new Canon A50. I just love it to death! With a 32 mb card I can store over 200 small size (640X480) pics or about 90 large size pics (1280X960). Thanks for asking.
