Hello blade forums,I was looking into buying some HandAmerican chromium oxide paste to put on a strop for my edge pro. I was wondering if chromium oxide would go well on nano cloth,if not would you put it on balsa, kangaroo,or something different? This would be after going to the 6k tapes on a glass blank, the strop I am using at the moment is the knives plus strop block which is fine but i'd prefer not to free hand.

Nice questions Raven. Before I got into the super steels like s110v and cps 20cp, chromium oxide, newspaper and leather worked great. I had a wire edge on the 110v and 20cp and the newspaper wouldn't even touch them, the paper just shredded.
The Knives Plus strop only barely smoothed it after a really long time! So I'm looking into either diamond or cbn (cubic boron nitride) on kangaroo. If you want a polished edge these will do it. I just want to smooth out an aggresive edge that will cut TP. Look into the cbn it looks pretty amazing. The Internet has a lot on it, it seems like the new go to abrasive in manufacturing for hard steel. KME by the way sells it to. Let us know how it goes.

I've looked at the cbn sprays and plan to get the get the .5 and .25 both on nano cloth,in the mean time I decided to go ahead and put the chromium on balsa until I have the cash to buy the kangaroo and cbn. Do you think a jump from .5 to .125 would be too big?

What kind of steel are you using it on? I'm confused you list .5 and .25 then at the end .5 and .125? From what I've read .5 is the most common.Check the Internet for those grit sizes and their use. I think knives plus uses .5 but call them to get their input. Fun stuff.

I question the need for the nano cloth. I've been using HandAmerican Chromium Oxide liquid for almost 20 years (same damn bottle, too!) and with experimentation haven't seen any difference between using it on smooth leather or rough leather when sharpening knives. I DO see a difference when sharpening blades with a thin blade geometry such as razor blades, broadhead inserts, etc., which respond better to the smooth leather. If sharpening knives for daily use, why spend the money on something that won't really make much difference?

I agree,I decided to go with balsa and i'm sure it'll be just fine.

While it may be fun to take an edge as far as it will go, or it may be a challenge to take the edge as far as it will go, there is more often time for a reality check, and take the edge as far as it 'needs' to go to get the job done.

Probably all knife knuts have at least one 'special' knife that we've pushed to the limit, given a mirror finish to its edge, and us it for braggin' rights. But how many auto mechanics, after cleaning the day's grease off their wrenches, spend another two hours giving them a mirror polish? How many carpenters stone-wash their cross-cut saws? "Hey man! Check out my roofing hammer! It drives nails!" Reality check...
