Chruch trip to the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

On Friday I went on a camping trip with my wife's church group. When we showed up that night the kids were trying to light the fire (one had a mag bar and was striking at some green twigs they had collected, another was trying to burn a few of the twigs) I asked if I could jump in and give it a whirl. I pulled out the 9 and started splitting some of the dry wood that they had sitting next to the firepit. We were originally supposed to be camping in another part of the park, but our reservation didn't start until Saturday. So we didn't have the much wood, and the area we were in didn't allow gathering of dead fallen timber.

We went to bed that night, and when we woke up I split the rest of the wood for a morning fire. After some much needed coffee, and bacon (best combo ever) we relaxed around the fire. Some of the group wanted to go to hike one of the trails so off we went. I didn't really touch the 16 this weekend, so I snapped a sexy pic so it wasn't completely left out. I think this picture turned out perfect (minus the shadow on the bottom right).

I have to say that the Endura 4 I carried the whole weekend did superb. I used it after we returned to the camp to try my hand at a friction fire. I'm getting better at making the embers, and transferring them to bundles. I do have to say that I cheated a bit...I used an old roller skate wheel as my bearing block, a spindle out of an old axe handle that I had from a project, and the bow I carved out of a piece of fallen limb from a wind storm. So the only on site gathered item was the hearth board.

We packed up camp and transferred over to the spot that we had reserved for the rest of the weekend. As it got later in the evening my wife decided that we shouldn't spend another night out there as my son (15 months) was starting to get sick and she didn't want him to have a rough night while not at home. So after I taught an impromptu class on bowdrills and started the nights fire, we headed out. It was a good weekend, and really rewarding to know that things I've learned here and other forums has actually payed off.

Thanks for reading.

It seems like the people (the kids anyway) from your wife's group aren't that experienced in camping. I would have loved to see their faces when you pulled out that 9. lol

I heard a couple "now that's a knife"s, and one of the kids told his dad he wanted one. I honestly felt like I had pulled out a lighter in front of cavemen when I used that "machete knife" to strike a Ferro rod and light some scraping of Magnesium from the kids bar.

Making magic in around the camp, always makes folks wanna "be that guy", its been happening forever.

Bic to cavemen and so on. Friction fire is a trick I pull out that really gets the "oooooohs and aaaahhhhhs" going. :D

Whip up a quick chair, make a tripod for cooking over the fire, or just making something that you need that someone "forgot to bring", makes folks understand, that there is a big hole in their lives, and they need knives to fill it. :D

See my sig.

Well put. I try to "be that guy" as much as possible. I get razzed alot from my family and my in-laws about always having my gear with me but at least twice at every outing somebody gets hurt or needs something and I am the first one they always come to.
