My wife and I drove up to the newly opened Bass Pro shop just north of Calgary today for a look-see, along with several thousand other Calgarians taking advantage of the spring weather. My wife headed to the clothing section, while I naturally made a bee-line to the cutlery counter. There were a couple of guys wearing Buck shirts at the Buck display, and I was highly impressed by their in-depth knowledge of steels, models, and Buck history. "Wow! Bass Pro is doing a heck of a job educating their staff," I thought; usually the people at the knife counter can't tell you which is the sharp and pointy end. I was having a very pleasant discussion with one of these congenial gentlemen, when I noticed his name tag: C.J. Buck! His Dad, I think, sent me a Kraton-handled 619 which I reviewed for an outdoors magazine about 20 years ago. I was looking for one with the S30V blade, which as Chuck explained, Buck only makes for Cabellas. Chuck then showed me a beauty of a 110 in CPM 154, which they make for Bass Pro, with the titanium/aluminum coating, and I nearly succumbed. The 110 (420HC standard, the one I keep coming back to) which I happened to have on my belt now has Chuck's autograph engraved on the blade. I'm going to have to think seriously about a visit to the Custom Shop. (Note: I couldn't decide whether to post this in the Canada forum or the Buck forum, so thought General Knife Discussion would be best.)
