Chunk cut from Calypso Jr. lightweight's lock

I noticed this a long time ago, but since I didn't plan on buying the knife, I didn't worry too much about it. Now that I'm thinking about it, I've got to know: On the lock depressor (I don't know what to call it), it is as if a small chunk has been cut out. Is there any reason for this? If so, what is it? That is one feature of lockbacks in which I have NEVER seen variations (with this one exception); it's always level with the handle surrounding it, and either flat or barely curved in such a way that the back of the handle has a continous line. What's the deal? Neither the stainless steel or micarta handled versions share this cut-out.

David Boye made folders with a recessed lock release before the Calypso Jr. Ltwt. came out, but I don't know if he invented it. You can see some examples here: www.boyeknivesgallery.com/folders.html

The indented bar is supposed to help prevent accidental release (like if you're holding the knife in a hammer grip and squeezing hard). Plus, it's a bit easier to depress the lock release bar because your thumb pad fits securely into the indent.

On the negative side, the design doesn't look quite as good since the "line" of the scale is broken.

Hi Howie. What Cerulean said is correct.

David Boye and Bob Taylor recommended this change several years ago. Yes, it does "change" the lines of the back of the knife. (which has been the major objection from others). However, we believe it is safer, which falls into the area of performance, which is Spyderco's prime purpose.

We give David Boye credit for the design in our ads and catalogs.

Oh. I don't find it unpleasant looking. It's a good enough reason for me. I didn't realize exactly WHAT you were giving him credit for

Yeah, I like Boye's designs - they are really COOL!

I think that the little indent looks way cool, and actually wish that my Micarta Calypso Jr. had the recessed lock. I just can't bring myself to get out the Dremel though, since the knife is too nice and I don't want to harm it. Too bad I don't really buy Zytel anymore. I mean, now that I have moved into knives like the Starmate, Calypso Jr., Microtech LCC, etc. I just can't seem to get excited about a plastic-handled pocketknife anymore.
