ok first off i realize im an idiot, and im sorry i did it.

last night i was taking out the trash and wanted to see if i could cut stuff in half with my monstorous becker bk9.

i went through all my rubbish and paper, then bits of wood then i saw it ! i thought, "i wonder if i can break a beer bottle with this thing" i took a swing, and !!whomp!!...... nothing another,,,,!!whomp!!

nadda.

i looked at my now very unhealthy looking blade and saw 2 wonderfull half circle marks that had taken the blade back about 2 mm and folded it perfectly. now it looks like it was eaten by a really big mouse.

so stupidy i thought glass would be no match for my knife. why was i wrong ?

ps the bottle is still in perfect health and im thinking of making it my edc from now on:D

So, I guess you learned that knives are not ment to cut class with, huh?.:p

glass is harder than metal, but more brittle. If you had used the thick spine of the blade, of course the glass would have shattered. But the nice sharp (thin soft) edge just rolled like play-doh. Sort of like a bumper, crumpling in to absorb shock. If you had swung harder or held the bottle in a more stable position, the bottle would have shattered but the thin edge still would have rolled.

I'm sure someone up on their physics can give a much clearer explanation.

Hee, hee... That sucks, but why are we not suprised that you were trying to cut a beer bottle, instead of one that once contained a non-alcoholic drink? ;)

People sometimes use a type of knife/sword that looks a little saber-like to open bottles of Champagne. I haven't personally tried it, though I've seen it done. For an explanation of the technique, click here.

Here's a pic of a Laguiole Champagne Saber:

I haven't examined one, but I don't think that Champagne sabers have a sharp edge.

FISHFACE5 is right! A knife with a Rockwell in the mid-fifties will be damaged by a bottle that is nearly double that! Oddly, seems like I remember another thread on this about a year or so ago!

josephus,

No worrys about the Becker BK 9/beer bottle trick. Despite the obvious danger of shattering glass, it still sounds like something I might do. Sometimes you just gotta' follow your impulses.

You might want to consider wearing Kevlar when you toss back a few, however. Never know what might come over you. Just kidding.

And cerulean, when I worked in France, I saw guys open (er, whack the top of) champagne bottles using just a heavy dinner knife. Ain't nothin' to it. josephus - do Not try this at home!
