Thanks to forum member Strider, I have the overwhelming urge to develope another design
smile.gif

My idea was to get into some larger, heavier duty fixed blades than what I currently make. I recieved lots of ideas in my double guard topic over the weekend. Striders idea was to start out with a Chute Knife because the overall construction would the same but the blade is a little shorter, more like what I make now.
My only design parameter is that I would like the knife have the guard mount from the blade side of the handle. Several makers use this technique including Lovestrand and Genovese. Other than that, everything is still on paper until I finalize the blade length, handle shape and materials.
I would appreciate pictures of favorite chute knives, input on this style of construction and any history on how the Chute Knife evolved.
Thanks ahead of time!
Neil

Senator..............
WOW! That is awesome

I just put it up as new wallpaper!
It says in the caption that the guard was hard to put on and it had to be slid on from the back of the handle. This is exactly what I am experimenting with now! Hopefully my design will mount from the front. Luckly at work I can do my R&D on the CAD system and make a few mock ups in aluminum on a Brideport. Fitting a guard in this manor is not as easy as one would think. My goal is CLOSE fit, pinned with no solder. The holes in the guard are a nice touch also.
Thanks!
Neil

Neil, I too would really love to see you make this style of knife. Senator, very nice pic. That's one helluva knife. Neil, what scale material were you thinking of? And which steel would you go with? And when can I get one?

Neil, I have a similar knife in the works right now. I have stabilized box elder burl scales for it. I'm still in the air about the guard though, I set it up for a front fitter and I want to stack it and am considering nickel silver between outer layers of brass and some colored spacers.I just have to feel that out, the blade is damascus and I want the spacers to enhance the whole thing without looking too busy.
I'll post a pic when it's finished.

This is creepy-
I'm having a chute knife/utility knife made for me by Rick Ludwig here in NYC- When I designed the knife I took THAT EXACT PHOTO of the Johnson Chute knife & sort of "Married" it to a handle/guard by Frank Cenofante (from the AG Russell "Cutting Edge" catalog). When I figure it out- I'll try to post a drawing and/or a photo of the knife when it is finished (target- March NYC show). I'm pretty excited about it.

Andrew, Paul,
I would like to see MY interpretation of this knife style TOO!!!

This may sound funny but after about 3 hours on the CAD system today and cutting some aluminum "practice" guards, I'm still undecided on best way to DO the guard!! I had to walk away from it, I'll get back to it tomorow! About $225 worth of 3/16" D2 will be showing up tomorow morning and that will also motivate me to iron out the design!!!
Jake and Rugger,
I would love to see those knives when they are finished. My first one will have a stainless guard and probably black G10 with some colored spacer material dividing it up. I just finished a Big Hunter like this. It looked like an Eddie Van Halen guitar!
This one will be a prototype just to iron out the construction and see how it feels.
After that, my goal is to make them with the same quality as the famous makers like the knife pictured above.
Thanks for all your input. I will keep everyone posted on my progress.

I think I only helped jog your memory is all.Looking forward to seeing your finished knife.

Kelly, you've convinced me. I simply must have one of Mr. Denning's knives.

I am generally an opponent of serrations on carry knives, but if the purpose of this blade is to cut oneself out of a chute (release malfunctioned, or you tangled in the fall) then I would propose a hooked blade with serrations on the concave portion of the belly. The tip of the hook can be dull or not, it won't matter much for shredding paracord.

Stryver

I agree with you Stryver,

When I go skydiving I carry the Spyderco Harpy, dont want to cut any more lines than you may have to, and it wont slip off. Keep in mind that you probably will only have hand to work with...Quickly!

One of the jump masters where I go carries a Buck knife with the gut hook for the same reason.

"War to the knife and knife to the hilt"

The "chute" knife design has always been my favorite knife. Twenty years ago I met Richard Bridwell at the New York Custom Knife Show and discussed a personal variation of this design to build for me.
As soon as I fiqure out how to post a picture, I will do so. It is a beautiful knife! It had a single guard with thumb serrations on spine, 154CM,high polish blade, rosewood micarta, SS guard, leather pouch sheath, double grind. The workmanship is near perfect. Hope to post soon!

Regards,

Dave
