Thanks Phil.
Kind of a loose term for a knife and it's purpose.Could use anything in a pinch.
Carried one of the Camillus M-1 auto's when I was in Viet Nam.Still have it.Kind of weak spring but still opens.

Why is it always the "Legs" who ask what a Chute knife is! LOL

I was issued a piece of crap orange handled Scharade to cut the lines. Of course when I asked "wouldnt we just use the canopy releases". I was rewarded with "10 to the winds". Thats 40 pushups (10 to each direction). As someone pointed out in the thread mentioned by Phil, the end that would have cut the best was not automatic.

As for cutting away the chute, I don't know. Most of our jumps were 1200 feet or less. By the time you check canopy, get the twists out of your risers, untie your rifle case and release your rucksack, I always found the ground was there within seconds to meet me. Trust me, in the last few seconds you have its best that you spend your time getting your "feet and knees" together so you can execute that "dynamite PLF"!

Phil, that was a good thread on the Chute knife.

Les, I heard all your jumps were night jumps...your eyes were closed

nifrand & Les, I've found that you don't need to know everything you just have to know where to look.

Hey Dogman,

Just the last 4 were night jumps. I was too scared to close my eyes on my last jump!

We are going to have to change the name of this thread soon

I had a pet leg once. He used to carry my chute off the DZ. I called him Igor due to the fact that he was disfigured...he didn't have the puncture wounds in his chest from the ceremonial "letting of the airborne blood." He used to walk all hunched over with his head held low in shame. Instead of calling me "Master" he went around saying, "Hoo-Ah" Hoo-Ah."

I 've never heard the term "leg" before. We used to land and have to push them out the cargo door.Sometime in a" hot lz" we would have to kick them out the door. The only ones that REALLY wanted out of the chopper were the South Vietnam regulars.Anything was better than those UH 34d's for them.I like you guy's term."Legs"
