Cigar Box Classics

I recently got these two knives in. Both are in boxes marked "(c) 2003 Imperial Schrade Corp." and "Hand Made in the U.S.A.". But they have markedly different handles. I found the cigar box classics in the 2004 catalog, which lists them as having "tree bark bone handles", and one looks like the catalog pics, but the other looks like it might be green stag bone. I couldn't find the 2003 catalog in the Collectors-r-us catalog section. Can anybody give me any idea why these knives would have such different handles? Were these issued in both 2003 and 2004, with different handles each year?

Thanks,

Dave

The Cigar Box knives are often a good deal, since there are copies of the boxes being produced by he who shall not be named. Some are hard to tell the difference when they get orphaned from the box. Yours Dave are obviously the real deal, and I especially like the green bone with the stag texture.

DOH! Thanks, Russell. I always look for the catalogs and forget all about the flyers. I see the two flyers do advertise two different handle materials, so that answers that question. I like these two enough I may have to keep an eye out for the other three knives in the series. I've seen a couple of the stockman editions on the bay, but at considerably higher prices than I paid for these, so have passed for now hoping to catch them a bit lower.

Yeah, I got suckered in by one of the fakes a couple weeks ago. Even the box is a piece of crap.

I have the brown jigged peanut like yours you show here Dave, and it took my awhile to figure out when it was made and if it was a pre 2004. I knew it was not pre 1973. I think it is interesting how Schrade made these blades. The blade is somewhat concave and thinner, like a Case peanut blade.

To my knowledge, there are the two styles you show, green mountain and brown bone. And the blue rope cut bone. Larry has flyers for these three on his site, and there is the one other color with a lighter red jigged bone. Were there four different handle colors in the pre 2004 Cigar Box knives?

Any of you guys snag this one yesterday? It was a good deal. It is one I'm calling the lighter red jig bone. The seller called it Classic Autumn Bone.

Wish I could say it was me got that one. It's a nice looking knife. I'm going to have to keep my eye open for more of them. As for the blue rope cut bone, I keep looking but they go a little higher than I'm ready to put out right now. Maybe after Christmas, the New Year, and the girlfriend's birthday in early January.:(
