I know that some of you knife guys and gals are cigar smokers.
What is a good quality made humidor that wont break the bank?
Should be great looking.
Shut air tight.
Hold about 1940-60 cigars.

I have some suggestions. I would avoid glass top models, and I would buy from a reputable company. I like Savoy humidors, but they might be more expensive than you want to pay. I found a 65-count Craftmen's bench humidor called the Maywood at Neptune cigar's website for $50. I have Craftmen's bench products, and I like them. I also have ordered cigars from neptune, and it is a good company. So you might want to go that route.

As for humidification, I recommend a little jar of humidification gel or humidification beads from Heartfelt industries.

I also would buy a larger humidor than you think you need now. Cigars tend to multiply when you buy a humidor, and pretty soon you run out of storage space. Trust me, I know this all too well (I have three desktop humidors, a footlocker humidor, and two coolers packed full of cigars).

Hope this helps.

Just to be clear, I do not own a humidor made by Craftman's Bench, but I do have a very well made cigar case from them that has held up extremely well to years of use. I would have no reservations about buying one of their humidors.

Thanks for the info Tracker. I will check out there site.

I read about Spanish Cedar wall thickness. What is the best thickness?

Any Spanish cedar in a humidor costing less than $500 is going to be a thin veneer. I don't think it's a big issue. All of my humidors have veneer and they work just fine.

What do you know about Diamond Crown humidor?

I have no personal experience with Diamond Crown, but I performed a search on cigar weekly forums, and the feedback on DC appeared to be positive. I have 2 no-name humis I bought for $45 each when I first started, and a $200 Savoy. I gambled in the first two and got lucky. Now I would not gamble. I would buy something nice from a company that puts it's name out there.

Whatever you buy, check the seal by locking a small illuminated flashlight inside and turning off the lights in the room. If you can see light peeking out through the edge, the seal is bad. Or some guys close the lid on a dollar bill sticking out of the humi and see how easy it is to wiggle the bill around. The bill should be stuck in there fairly right. You shouldn't be able to easily pull it out of the humidor.

I prefer the flashlight trick, but I would do at least one of those maneuvers to test the seal, regardless of what you buy.

So you dont suggest buying online? I should check out before I receive ?

No I would buy online and check the seal upon delivery. All the good deals are online. You will pay through the nose if you buy from a brick and mortar shop.

Can you please give me a couple Brand names and models to check out?

Diamond Crown is it. Why would you put $400-$600 in a cheap humidor? If you want cheaper but not as pretty, get a Pelican case from Xikar and get their humidity disc and a hygrometer. That will keep your cigars perfectly.

I love my Diamond Crown and my Xikar pelican cases, as well as a regular Pelican case normally used for a camera or something that I use to travel with.

I bought an extra large Savoy humidor from smokingpipes.com for $160. That was the best price I could find, and it's a big, beautiful humidor. They have smaller models as well. The savoy has a great seal- if you drop the lid, it makes an audible "whoosh" sound when it closes. Savoy would be my recommendation, as they are the only company I have personal knowledge of. Good luck.

I have a nice 50-count desktop Savoy model and can agree with the positive statements others others have made about the brand. That being said if you find yourself falling down the cigar slope (it's just as steep as the knife slope) you'll soon be looking for bigger and bigger sizes. I wound up going the fridgador route with a converted wine fridge with custom Spanish Cedar drawers and microbead humidification. I quit cigars for the most part five years ago but the stock I had on hand (about 150) has remained in perfect condition with only a twice yearly recharge of the beads. Another option is to store the bulk of your stogies in good quality coolers with humidification and then just keep a handful at the ready in a nice desktop humidor.
