Cigar Tubes

I have a bunch of empty cigar tubes (aluminum).

How do these stand up for storing stuff in (eg. fishing kit, fire starting, etc.?)

I've thought about getting some of the cheaper plactic tubes, as they seem sturdier. My concern is that the wall thickness will not provide any crush resistance, and the tops don't screw on, they are a slip-fit, so there would be a waterproofing concern (unless I silicone it).

Anyone have opinions or experience with these??

They're kinda cool - but you're right about the wall thickness. You can put stuff like fishing equipment, etc. and put them in a front BDU shirt pocket, etc. You can wrap them with black electrician's tape to seal the cap on. I wonder if you wrap the whole thing will that make them more sturdy?

Around the house, if you get a test tube rack that has large enough holes to hold them you can store seeds in them. You can write on them with a Sharpie marker or slap a label on them.

The April issue of Smoky Mountain Knife Works catalog offered stainless steel cigar tubes that slip fit. These might hold up better. Also, they would seem to be a good way to store small items in hollow handle knives and tools such as the Gerber Axe line or certain shovels. It is 7 inches by 3/4 inch diameter and listed as item# SX013.

I like the cheap plastic tubes myself. The aluminum ones do tend to dent and ,for me at least, don't hold up as well as plastic. You might want to consider asking Bill Clinton how they hold up over time after encountering intern bodily fluids. I would bet the plastic would be better for that. This would be the true test of the cigar case.

Hey Guys,

I have used short pieces of PVC pipe (5-8") for storing everthing from maps to matches and fishing gear. You can get end caps to fit on them. I always glue one end on and then just swedge fit the other. This usually seals it off pretty good. Hope this helps

Gadget45,try using those plastic "packing list enclosed"bags to store paperwork on your bike. They are plastic bags that fold closed and have a glue side on the back.Water proof and they stick real well to the under side of your motorcycle seat.:)

The seat on my Harley doesn't come off without a screwdriver.

I'd just drop it in my tool bag.

They are great for keeping tire pressure gauges in, mine are a little delicate. When there in the glove department, got shoken around alot.

When I was a kid, I used to make home-made rockets out of them, some of them would accidently explode. My intentions of it were to take off.

There nice to have around.

I have had the slip on type lids come open under pressure on both cigar tubes and recycled medicine bottles. I highly suggest you consider pill bottles or another container with a screw down lid.
