Someone started a thread about the Israeli incident in current events and it got shut down with a note saying it was Political. Someone else started a thread in Political about it and you guessed it - it got shut down because it wasn't political.

No! You, Mr. Remmmm, are entirely wrong.

The thread in the Political forum was closed because it was what is often called a "Reading Assignment" or a "Link-and-Run" or a "Copy-Paste" post. This is a post in the form of "You might find this interesting..." followed by either a link to some outside source or something copied word-for-word from an outside source. We simply don't allow this type of post in our Political forum. Instead, we ask posters to make some minimally-substantial contribution of their own, to express some thoughts or ideas or opinions of their own in their own words. Asking a raised-eyebrow, provocative question does not constitute expressing some thougths or ideas or opinions of your own... unless, of course, you go on to then substantially answer your own question. In this way, our discussion does not deteriorate into throwing links at each other.

This has a second effect: it requires some personal investment. You can't just hide behind other people's words... much less their ideas and thoughts. You've got to put your own thoughts and opinions and ideas out there in your own words.

It has a third effect: it causes you to actually think a little bit about what your ideas and opinions are and why you hold them. You may even find yourself questioning your own position. This is healthy and beneficial.

The final effect this has is to exercise our members in expressing their own thoughts and ideas and opinions in their own words. This builds up an important skillset within the knife community.

Read the rules for the political forum:

Defend your position - If you post an article or make a statement, back it up with some commentary on what brought you to that. This isn't the Drudge Report. Posting a link or complete article without bothering to state your own position and why you think it is right or wrong will be viewed as a "link and run" and you'll get dinged for failing to follow the forum rules.

You may use materials from outside sources to illustrate or prove your thoughts and ideas and opinions that you're presented in your own words, but not to talk for you.

So, it's not acceptable to say, "My favorite talking head says: <insert cut-and-paste from outside source here>" No. Aside from likely being a copyright violation, that doesn't include any ideas or thoughts or opinions of your own.

It's not acceptable to post, "My favorite taking head says: <insert link to outside source here>. What do you guys think?" Again, no thoughts or ideas or opinions of the poster here. Asking a provocative question isn't expressing an idea or opinion. It's not taking and defending a position. It's really often trolling is what it is.

Also not acceptable: "My favorite talking head says: <insert link or copy/paste here>. I agree with him completely!" While it's nice that you agree with him -- that's a start -- it's really not very substantial; it's got no substance, no real ideas or thought process of your own.

What is acceptable is this: "My favorite talking head says <insert a summary of the head's position in your own words> <insert, if you want to, a couple of brief, key excerpts from the talking-head to illustrate the summary you've given> <insert, if you like, a link to full text for those who really are interested>. I agree with this position because <insert your own reasoning in your own words>." It's not necessary that you write a lengthy, scholarly dissertation -- very often, a couple of sentences, a few dozen words will do just fine. But, they do have to be your words and they do have to take and defend some position in some substantial (meaning "having substance") way.

Want to discuss a news story in the Political forum? Fine. Begin with a brief summary (less than 100 words, please) and then a link to the whole story for those seriously interested. BUT, don't stop there. Next, tell us what YOU think about this story. At minimum, tell us why you think that, out of the tens of millions of articles on the internet, this is the one we should all read today. There has got to be something which you think is significant about this article or this event. Tell us what it is and why you think it's important or signficant.

Much the same is true in Current Events. Don't just go posting a cut-and-paste of a story or a link to somewhere else. If I want to know what the news of the day is -- well that's really not what BLADEforums.com is all about; I'll go to CNN or Foxnews or some other site dedicated to bringing me the news of the day. This is a DISCUSSION forum and our Current Events forum is a discussion forum. So, discuss. Say something about what you've posted. At minimum, tell me why you think that, of all the tens of millions of articles on the internet, this is the one you think I should read.

As for what goes in Current Events vs. Political: we will not allow CE to become a dumping ground for people who are too lazy -- or are otherwise unable -- to comply with the rules in the Political forum. The "what, when, where" of something is often Current Events material. But "who" and "why" are often Political Forum materials. The line is not, of course, always clear.

^^^ Well-said, Chuck. Probably why I keep away. It's good hard work to be relevant.
