Civil War Sabers

Welcome To Blade Forums

I do not know your budget or intended purposes but those are both minimally appropriate to represent the swords of that war. On a low budget for decoration or costuming, they may seem fine but should not be used functionally. They may have some vague similarity to these patterns but they are actually pretty horrible examples of the genre.

There are a few grades of what you will see out there and this you have linked are at the boottom of the barrel. The cheapest really means just that.

In the mid range, you will find the India made reproductions from varied retailers

Many of the "OK" American Civil War swords can be had at a bit more than $100. Some range higher in price and I think I spent about $175 for a specific sword I meant to be used heavily and slightly modified. Keep in mind I was hunting for a sword by size and form without regard to north or south and without a need for blade decoration. I was looking for a fairly straight infantry pattern I could use for both drills and cutting. I then ground it down thinner and to a sharp edge for cutting.

With that said, if you can come up with a few hundred dollars, there are a lot of originals on Ebay that may look a bit shabby at first but can be had for less than $500 in many forms and types. I have originals of that period and currently collect mostly antiques but still bought a modern sword for continuous work. Even very good original cavalry trooper swords are selling at that $500 mark.

Here is a fairly recent list of my dealer bookmarks for window shopping and learning. Many are not civil war. Some may have nothing to do with swords but you can pick out a few for browsing. I kick myself time and again for sharing these but sharing is sharing and the links are simply from my own surfing.

Yeah, that's all they're for is decoration. Like I said, I'm new to this and still shopping around. I appreciate the links, though. I'll check those out. I don't have a lot to spend, but that's why I'm lookin around right now.
