1. Does anyone have any photos or information on how the Civilian or Matriarch has been customized for either utility or beauty? Or, any individuals/companies that may do or have done such work?

2. Other than it being expensive, does anyone have an opinion on dulling a PE civilian/matriarch to use as a drone?

Thanks.

I'd love to have a Matriarch drone - in fact, I've bothered Sal with requests a couple of times on these forums - but I don't think it would be feasible to dull a live one, due to the very fine and sharp tip and serrations.
BTW, I mention a Matriarch trainer because I think it would be easier for Spyderco to make those; after all, they can use the same red handle as the Endura trainers. Only the blade would be different. Who knows - maybe a limited run (here I go again! ;)).

You know, Leo, modifying an Endura trainer to include a "softened" recurve sounds like a great do-it-myself project! Gonna get me one & try.

I'm not much of a handyman, Brian, so I guess I'll wait for you to try it first. ;)
Sounds like a good idea though. Let us know if it works out!

With a little surfing, I've started to answer my own question on customizing.

1. there is a company that does jeweling of the blade and handles on all knives - interesting ...

2. Santa Fe knifeworks offers a number of different handle options for the Harpy.

Yes, Bill. Santa Fe stoneworks does some wonderful work on stainless-scaled Harpys (and others). I didn't bring that up originally because you asked about Civilians and Matriarchs (neither of which have the conducive handles to my knowledge).

I LOVE my MOP-Santa Fe Stoneworks Harpys...carry one all the time and the other stays in the collection.

Leo: As soon as I acquire an Endura trainer...it'll be my project. The dimensions on the Endura drone allow for plenty of metal for this, I think.

Frank Recupero customizes Spydercos and other production knives. You can see some of his work here .

Brian, I think the biggest problem would be the Matriarch's downward curved tip, which goes about half an inch or so bellow the belly of an Endura blade (I'm guessing here cause I'm too lazy to go grab my knives and a ruler...). Seems like a tough task to me... But maybe I'm just being pessimistic. I wish you luck on that project!

Here is an idea for customization of an old aluminum Civvie. Buff off all the Tuf-ram to a nice shine. Remove the kraton inserts. Replace them with Rayskin of your choice.

Here are a couple of snapshots of a Recupero worked Civilian. I had this one was done for a lady.

Terry,
First off thanks for the CF crickets they are great. Second, I have to know how to get into contact with the person who did that civilian. I've got to have some of that work done to a few knives.

Thanks
Jay

Care to share? :)

Leo,

Thanks to all for a look at the Frank Recupero customized knives. Maybe, Santa will bring me one of those very very nice Crickets - but at $300+ I'd better be very very good !!

Jay,

First off, I am glad the CF Crickets are what you expected. As to the file work, I sent you an e-mail with info for you. I love this work and have several worked by this craftsman.

Just bought a Civillian (so hard to get in the UK) and have fallen in love with the Frank Recupero filework above.
Does anyone know of a tried or trusted knife customiser who can do similar work in the UK?
Cheers,
Dave

Brian, as you may know, "Pearl" is the symbol for a 30th wedding anniversary. My wife wanted pearl earings. And, of course, I had to go with the MOP harpy from Santa Fe Knifeworks. My problem is that I just won the knife on Ebay ($160 - good price I think)but I have to keep the knife locked up and gift wrapped until the actual anniversay in December.

If anyone else is interested as of today - 4/10/02, there is another MOP harpy on Ebay.

I'll look forward to carrying mine starting in 8 Months, 3 weeks, 4 days ...! The countdown begins!
