Greetings everyone!

With this review we introduce a new knife made by CustomKnifeFactory named “SUKHOI” and created by Russian promising designer Anton Malyshev aka Tohus.

First question is about the name of the knife – Suhkoi. What does it stand for? «Sukhoi» is the Russian major aircraft holding company, most famous for producing military aircrafts. Under impression for their jets Tohus designed a knife in attempt to convey the beauty and power of these war machines in a folder knife.

Handle

Looking at the handle first thing that grabs attention is the composed scale of Ti liner and CF plate covering one half of the handle. 3D machined CF plates of concaved shape are precisely fitted to matted titanium scales and fixed with two screws each and pivot point big screw. Wave-pattern runs along the scales bringing not only eccentric look, but secure and tactile pleasant grip.

On the back scale we see frame lock and pocket clip. Wave pattern covers the frame as well.

Between scales lies a Ti long flat backspacer with bevels on the sides. According to design it echoes to the liners emerging out of CF scales in the area of the pivot point.

Pocket clip

The clip follows the wave-lines design, rather slim not to bring discomfort in a grip and tight enough to fix the knife on the pocket secured. Fixed to scale with one screw and technically pitted into the scale to avoid the backlash through the time.

Gripping the handle even tightly is not raising any discomfort – thanks mostly to thin handle shape and flat clip format. Here is how the knife looks in the arm and on the pocket.

The handle dives confidently deep into the pocket - only 10 mm of handle edge is observed. It’s not of course a concealed-carry, but somewhat a deep-carry one.

Blade

Blade of the knife is as a much spectacular as the handle is. Let’s see it in the knife closed state – every single millimeter was counted when defining the blade length, surely centered good.

The blade shape is a continuation of the handle line from the back and even in closed state from the front look part of the blade is being hidden inside the scales not breaking the line.

The blade is deployed one-handed with pushing the blade thumb stud. It is a single stud, not reversible, and securely pitted into the blade same as the pocket clip granting more durable usage.

Mechanics smooth work is provided by the 2RBS installed (two rows, each row 8 balls in plastic distance ring that is more resistant to side loads then a single row). Inside the frame a steel lock bar insert is hidden, protecting Ti frame from wear out that can cause blade play over time. CF plate also works as a lock bar stabilizer here.

The blade length is 105 mm (more than enough for a folder), looks very streamlined - edge is a long straight line nevertheless due to thickness of 4 mm and bevels starting after 5 mm flats blade appears to be a robust one. The tip as well retains enough thickness and strength together with bevels grinded to 0.6 mm at the edge that resist to edge chipping. We used S35VN powder steel, already proved steel for an EDC folder with fine edge retention and wear and corrosion resistance.

Handmade satin finish grants a pricey look and visually make the blade even more violent, back of the blade is flat and satin finished as well.

«Sukhoi» in Russian is an adjective one of the meanings of which is «lean», «stringy built» – no fat, only muscles and pure strength. This knife appears to be – slim fit but 100% functional, with good safety margin and balance, graceful and violent at the same time.

Stay tuned, we got more interesting knives for you!

In the meantime some pics of the customized Sukhoi for dessert.

It's a very nice knife well compared to the airplane. A little smaller version would be ideal.
Thank you for sharing.

Wow. Beautiful knife with a lot of excellent design features and high-end materials. I really like it.

Can you explain why you made the blade so thick, especially on such a narrow blade?

Nice knife, a lot of nice solutions and design. Are you going to make also a smaller version (for example 3")?
