Subjective question, lots of info on the threads, but which lock do YOU trust more? Spyderco Manix lockback versus Benchmade 710 Axis?

I have both -- I can't decide. But push come to shove, I vote Manix.

I don’t own anything Spyderco makes so that puts me in the perfect position to offer an unbiased opinion. Axis.:D

Well, having broken numerous lockbacks and only one axis (admittedly I'd become more carefull by the time the axis came around), I trust the axis more.

bk400,

PLEASE READ THIS!!!!

DOES ANYONE READ THE ANOUNCEMENTS AT THE TOP OF THE FORUMS?!!! :grumpy:

The announcement is there for a reason. Please read it.

I'm moving your thread the appropriate forum.

First I have to ask, is the stop-pin on the 710 screwed in?
I had both the Griptilian and the Mini-Griptilian and the stop-pin was not screwed in to the liners.
Instead the entire lock rests upon a stop-pin that only has about 1/16" of steel in each liner.

So I vote for the Manix.

That's where mine failed (someone borrowed me a mini-Grip - and I bought them a full-size in return).

It is a area of weakness, but to get the failure took a rather high lateral (side load due to twisting). I feel most folding knives would have broken and failed under such a loading.

What is the size of the pin that holds the Manix's lock-back?

The Manix's pin receives stress when the knife is under opening and closing movements; vice the 710's stop-pin recieving stress in the opening and the locking-bar on the closing. (could be better stated)

Chill out, my friend. Honest mistake.

Mmmmh, I am not sure how wise it is to tell a Moderator to "chill out" or call him friend as long as you aren't very sure that he IS your friend. But that is your call, my friend....

Good thing that our moderators are pretty laid-back.

Yeah, there are about a millions ways that a moderator could have said the same thing without sounding so freaked out...yikes.

Anyhow, I love my Manix, but the very slight play in the blade keeps it a touch lower on my list than the Axis design. My griptilian is so solid. Overall, I far prefer the Manix, but lock for lock, I like the Axis better.

Had you read the announcement prior to posting as asked there would be no mistake.

I admitted an honest mistake and thought the moderator was a bit more brusque than necessary. Courtesy should run both ways.

I am more in Frame-Lock & Lock-Back zone.

Just perosnal preference. I mentally trust more. I do own few AXIS. Non dissapoint me so far.

Yet.....I like manix better.

1.) What happened to good old fashioned apologies? I am sure a simple "sorry" would have been enough, and far more appropriate than a snappy response as the moderator had to move your thread.
2.) Moderators aren't here to be courteous, they are here to moderate. What is next, Cougar holding the hand of one who walks the plank ?

But hey, as I said, that is between you and KV. No need to get involved anyfurther.

An employee from Benchmade stated the AXIS lock was the strongest lock, taking more load than their frame locks. They also stated their frame locks were stronger than some other frame locks on the market. I trust the Axis lock more than anything, followed by a frame lock. I've had lock backs fail because a small piece of pocket lint got between the lock area.

Also I think I'd rather have the BM710 close on my fingers than the Manix. :) That blade scares my fingers. I give slicing ability to the Manix over the 710 any day.

Actually, in regards of the blade folding on you. Most if not all Spyderco have the front choil which will make contact with your finger first instead of the blade. Don't be scare, try it! :)
