Classes, mentors, and learning the craft

Friends,

I was scrounging the web last night trying to find classes to attend and potentially a mentor. I’m in Arizona and was thinking I could probably find someone willing to spend time with easily (man, i’m an idiot lol). Most of the classes i see include forging - which I have little interest in at the moment given I can’t even grind a blade evenly yet. I was wondering if any has taken classes or knows anyone nearby that would be willing to help out? Feedback is important - I know Noah Vachon is going to be offering a two day class in Canada and I’m planning on attending that but was hoping there was something closer. I know two makers in the Phoenix region but they do folders and aren’t really looking to take on anyone. Maybe this is a pipe dream but I figured it was worth posting here - feedback and maybe a lead. Thanks for all the replies - DustinY

I’m just looking for someone to review the process with I guess, guide me through a couple builds and finishing. I’d pay for the time and bring materials or whatever. If it’s something you’d like to do, let me know.

I'm already attending, was hoping someone wanted to take on an extra hand. It seems HSC is close enough and willing enough to have me for a couple days - so i'll also take advantage of that :)

Dustin, Glad to hear you are attending the hammer in. When I started I also wanted to use Stainless Steels by stock removal. I attended local hammer ins and all of the knowledge I gained helped me! I went to a Hammer in at Tony Swanson’s place. “The Sword & Stone”. He is such a talented, Forger, Grinder, Stone setter/ Jeweler, etc , etc , etc he has made swords/knives etc for many movies etc...You won’t know what you can learn until you show up!:)

Was hoping to learn about more events like this or if anyone else wanted to sell me some shop time to teach me some things. Maybe someone at the hammer in will have more leads.
