Even as a kid growing up in Australia over 40 years ago I knew what Americas most famous knife the Bowie looked like, a large clip point with a sharpened swedge. Later in life you read articles on Jim Bowie's original knife, and altough no one seems to agree exactly what it looked like, most of the examples shown look nothing like a clip point. I know clip points go back at least to the dark age Seax, so where did the modern renditions get their design from? Where Hollywood knives like the "Iron Mistress" copies of Civil War knives?

As You say clip-points are way older than the bowieknife, but the above thread in the Bernard Levine's forum, is about early clip-pointed bowie's from the 1830'ies.
English & Huber made American bowieknives in Philadelphia.
Maybe that's where the Iron Mistress got its inspiration.
