Classic Lock-Back with Carbon Blades?

I'm in the market for a large, old fashioned lock-back. The 110's are half the price they were when I was a kid. While my Buck Big Sky, sharpens well and works well with the 420, I'd prefer a carbon blade if available. Does anyone offer these? The old classic Puma's? Bokers?

If stainless is it, how are the Puma's?

Or go with the 110?

should have said "Carbon Blade", can't edit subjects...

Can't really speak for the old Puma lockbacks, bus as the Puma stainless steels in general go...
I've had a Puma Prospector (which has a stainless blade) as my main edc for many, many years now.
I haven't done any truly heavy tasks with it (the knife itself is too small for that), but anything else I've thrown at it has been handled with ease and confidence. Everyday chores around the house and the office (paper, cardboard, foodstuff, string, plants, and so on...), hunting (mainly small game, but the occasional deer has been gutted with it), fishing, camping chores and whittling - it's taken everything without complaining, and I haven't had to do any more frequent sharpening on this blade than on any other one I have, including carbon steel ones and new fancy-steel ones.
All in all, I'm very happy with the stainless steel in this knife.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure Puma still uses the same stainless now as they did in the old Puma Prospector. But if they do, and you're planning to use the knife for approximately the same things I've used my Prospector for, then I'm sure you'll be happy with a Puma knife.
Try to get an old one though, the fit and finish of the old ones are miles ahead of the ones they build today.

Queen makes a Mountain Man lockback in 1095, don't they?

I know you can get 'em in D2, which they call semi-stainless.

Good luck!

The old Schrade 125OT "Mustang" Lock Blade at 5 1/4" closed comes to mind immediately.......it has a fine carbon steel blade just over 4" with sawcut delrin handles. Some over on the Schrade forum will tell you it's the finest "hunting" folder ever made.( but those Schrade guys are full of hyperbole...it's really just a damn good folder ! ). Back in the 70's when I picked mine up they sold for $19.99....but since Schrade closed it's doors and "moved" to China they are no longer readily available; however they can frequently be found in new/mint condition on eBay for $50, give or take.
Here's one : http://cgi.ebay.com/Schrade-Mustang-Lockblade-125OT-Knife-NIB_W0QQitemZ330044853703QQihZ014QQcategoryZ48820QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (dunno why this listing claims the blade is stainless.....it's good o'l carbon steel !).

I have often thought about having someone put a pair of custom Elk stag handles on mine...I think that the white bone against the patina-ed carbon blade would look smart.

Doesn't case now make a one hand opener lockback hunter in their chrome vanadium steel?

Pinetree, let me know if you are going to go for that Schrade or not. I'm partial to folding hunters and if you aren't going for it, I just might have a go at it.

Yeah, Gramps, that stainless blade comment struck me as odd too as it sure looks carbon from the pic. Of course, as Codger pointed out in the Schrade steels thread in the Schrade folder, there were some changes in steel we weren't told about.

Interesting how we change over the years. I used to pack a 110 or an LB7 type for a while when I was younger. Now, while I respect the Buck 110 and others, the pattern just doesn't have any real appeal to me. On the other hand, I've come to really like the folding hunters a lot.

........isn't that the truth ! However, in my house, I leave out a LB7 stashed on a sideboard ....and often as I pass 'er by I'll stop....and pick it up.....and still think to myself ......what a nice, handsome, sturdy, big......and HEAVY.......folding knife it is !

Well, you could go for one of the queen mountain man lockbacks in 1095:

http://www.cumberlandknifeworks.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=mtman1095

Or you could go with a 110 in ATS-43 (which I believe they are now using 154CM, the crucible american made equivalent of ATS-34). Or in BG42, from the buck custom shop:

http://www.buckknives.com/custom_knife_shoppe.php

Or cabela's sells their alaskan buck 110 in S30V and rosewood, or stag.

rosewood:

stag:

If you can strop a blade on leather, having to re-edge a high end blade will never be an issue for you (will not have to worry about sharpening).

I have a few custom bucks in stag and ats-34, a 110 in S30V, and quite a few others in high end steel. I never sharpen any of mine on anything but an old German rhineleder strop.

I've got a Case Warncliff Copperlock and think it's great. It's not as heavy duty (read: thick & heavy) as the Buck of course, but it's a great carbon steel lockback, and the blade shape is extremely useful.

While I have no stake in the above auction, the seller is one of my favorite vendors, and you might check out his eBay or web store whether you like this Case or not. He's got the best prices on Queen, S&M, and Canal Street that I've found, and he also carries Moore Maker, Buck, Boker, Eye Brand, and many others worth looking at.

...I couldn't agree more...Kenny's just great to deal with. I picked this up from him recently :
(It's a '70 Case 8 Dot 2 blade jack).

Amos Iron Wolf, I'm not going for the Schrade, please feel to go for it. Thanks for the consideration.

MooreMaker has a couple of lockbacks in 1095 carbon. One is bone, the other Ram's Horn. The bone handled knife looks identical to my A.G. Russell Yellow Delrin Hunter in 154CM. I believe A.G.'s is made by Camillus, and I think MooreMaker uses Camillus for its Working Knives, Queen for the more expensive ones. Mine is a little smaller than a 110, but the lockup is outstanding. The only complaints I have are cosmetic...there are couple of tiny sharp points of delrin at the corners of the bolsters.

Mine is a great knife. D2 is a great steel for those that can't sharpen the super steels, like me. Its basically stainless for the casual knife user.
