Does anyone still make a decent affordable carbon steel traditional Bowie knife? Squared off bone handles, some where around 7" blade with no holes drilled in it or deep serrations on the spine. There is some overpriced crap damascus blades, but no good old carbon steel. I have looked and the best I seem to find is the occasional Solingen blade on the "auction site", some of which are 80+ years old and going for surprisingly high prices. It may be that that this era is gone and I will just have to keep bidding on old classics but it would be nice if someone still made knives like they used to.

Thanks,

Have you seen the Northwoods "Cowboy Bowie?" I think the blade is somewhere in the 6" vicinity, but it may be close to what you're looking for.

Muggins,

I think you may be right. I have never put a knife together before, but it should be an interesting project, and yes more affordable. I am emailng them to find out exactly what kind of steel they use. Does anyone have any experience with their blades?

Thanks,

You can take a chance with Windlass Steelcrafts, through Atlanta Cutlery. Be careful of the heat-treat, though.

thx - cpr

I looked at Atlanta Cutlery. I kind of liked their American Frontier knife, but while I don't buy high dollar customs or Busses I still have to have confidence in whatever knife I buy and the comments about questionable heat treatment of Windlass knives removed them as an option for the time being.

Thanks for the suggestion though,

Track of the Wolf is good, as is Dixie Gun Works - both have similar (often identical) offerings, but their stock is slightly different; I built a bowie once from DGW, and with a scale tang it wasn't too difficult. You can also get a variety of handle materials there. My favorite blade is the "natchez" bowie blade, which is a beautiful Solingen drop point w/ coffin handle at about a 7" blade length.
