Wow ..... just wait until Carl (jackknife) reads this one - a Peanut
and a Classic SD in
one thread!!!
Ohhh, I think somebody needs to pass the smelling salts! So much exitement at this age!!
You really need to talk to Karen, my better half on this issue. Karen is the official classic tourturer in this house. She does everything but put it on the rack. I only became an enthusiast of the mighty mite after watching Karen do her worst to a classic for a year, and it never broke. Got loose some, but never catastrophicaly failed.
After watching Karen, I started my experiment of carrying one, and making a point of using it before my other bigger knives. It did about 98% of what needed to be done.
The only time I carried a classic as my only knife, was at Karen's cousin's reunion that was held in Key West for the first time in 2003. I hadn't flown since 9-11, and didn't know what to expect, so I left all the cutlery at home, planing on a visit to the local 'mart for a cheap knife to carry for the vacation. We were packing light and didn't plan on checking any luggage. Planning on living in swim trucks and Teva sandles we didn't need to pack a real bag. The first day, we're at the beach, and we had some sandwiches from a local shop, and I go to open a mayo packet, shortly after putting on sunblock. No way that was going to work. Karen says "Here, try this." and hands me her classic from her purse. I look at her and ask where the hell that came from, and she says it was in her make-up kit. It got lost in the x-ray of lipstick tubes, compact, and stuff. Karen walted right through TSA with it in her purse. For the next 5 days it was my only knife in my pocket, and it did just fine. It not only cut stuff, but the tweezers picked out a thorn from the bottom of a nieces foot, opened a few packages, trimmed a broken nail, and other sundry duties.
The only place where the little classic fell short was food duty. Not a long enough blade for bread and cheese. But we made do. The Sd tip on the nailfile works well on small to medium phillips screws like on GE toasters and Kenmore clothes dryers. You'd be surprise at the stuff I've fixed using a classic. I made a little leather pouch sheath so I can carry the classic on my keys, but take it out unattached so as to use it better.
I imagine it would do for a city or suburban dweller who just needs a wide mission capable pen knife. Yesterday we went downtown in D.C. to the National Gallery Of Art for a Gauguin exibit that is on loan, and I carried only a classic because of museum security. I lived through the day just fine.
One member here called the classic the pen knife of the 21st century. He just may have been right!
