So, in your opinion, what are the classic Spyderco and Benchmade folders that any knife knut should have in his collection?

The Endura, Delica, 710, and Griptilian seem to be highly regarded here, kind of like "classic" models, but besides those folders, what else?

Well, the ones you mentioned are definitely at the top of the list. Other than those I would say that the Benchmade AFCK and the Spyderco Military need to be there as well.

Newer highly regarded blades should include BM's Ritter series, the Rukus large and small, Skirmish large and small the Spyderco Military CF in S30V and BG42. You don't have to look to hard to find 'em from these 2 companies.

Well, having just picked one up may be unduly biasing my answer here, but I'll say the Civilian. Perhaps the perception of that model is too narrow, given it's nature and stated purpose, for folks to think of it in the same way as an Endura or a BM 710. It isn't standard knife fare, but I'd put it up there as a classic in my book. Even before owning one the Civilian was one knife that would always spring to mind first if you asked me to name Spydercos off the top of my head.

I'm hardly an expert on Benchmade folders so I won't comment on them, but I'll give you my take on the Spyderco end. I certainly think the Endura and Delica have reached that status....and the Native too, since so many different variations have been produced....and the Native can even be found for sale in a ubiquitous national chain super-mart.

The Police and Military, as mentioned above, have been through plenty of configurations throughout the years, and as far as I know, have been in continuous production since their introduction. So I would add them also to the classic "roll call".

Now there are some older Spyderco models.......long out of production that are quite unique and were designed by some very talented men; of these I believe the Shabaria, the earlier Viele, and the Zowanda are classic BY DESIGN....the Ed Schempp Persian , I think, is destined to be included into this design "hall of fame", if you will. Others may come along, will have favorites I have left out, and make a case for their classic status. I, by NO MEANS, have covered all the possible Spyderco classics !

-Regards

Cricket! and I think the Spin will join the list, too.

All the Wegners probably qualify, especially the Mouse, even considering they are being produced by Tim Wegner himself now.

Everyone has named great knives so far, but no one mentioned THE classic Benchmade folders -- their balisongs!

Benchmade-Boguszewski Spike, Auto Spike, AFCK, Auto AFO, Brend Folder, Crawford Leopard, Emerson CQC7, Elishewitz Ares, Infidel, Pardue Model B.

Spyderco-Original Goddard, full size, any and all Police Models, Worker, Lum Tanto and Chinese Folder, Catcherman, Viele Folders, JD Smith Folder, Moran fixed blade, persian style, Cricket, Civilian, those are just off the top of my head.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Any of the Terzuola/Spyderco collaborations: C15, C19, and C55 StarMate. They are all out of production and bringing high prices on the collectors' market, but they are all gems, especially the C55.

I would consider Spyderco classic:
Delica
Endura
Military
Native
Police
Cricket
Calypso Jr. or Caly3
Ed Schempp Persian
Shabaria
Bob Lum Tanto and Chinese
Harpy
