Was checking out A.G. Russell knives website today and found out Colombia River Knife and Tool will be making a cheaper but licensed copy of the Sting with the blessing/permission of Mr. Russell. Here's the link to the page http://www.crkt.com/sting.html. Price thru A.G. Russell knives is $29.95.They are taking preorders now and delivery is expected mid March. Got 2 on preorder. I always wanted one especially after reading the adventure series
The Survialist by Jerry Ahern. The main character John Roarke carried a Sting.

I saw that in the latest AG Russell catalog.
I gave away a sting back in the late 80's. It was just too darn easy to carry,
and at that time, getting a concealed permit was nigh on impossible.
Here in Va, now that Permits are "shall issue" a Concealed Handgun Permit is just that, and does not include edged weapons.

Daddy,
In some places it is ok to carry if it is under a certain size limit...That is what we have here in Gods country (NC)

Gotta get me one of those...Already have had 2 people ask about pocket sheaths for them...AHHH new knife's:D

Handled it at the show in Vegas; wasn't impressed by the (epoxy?) finish; was way too slick, and there were no thumb serrrations like some manufacturers put into the thumb groove on their cast plastic letter openers. Visually appealing, though, and had a nice heft. It just needs a LOT more texture IMO. Paracord wrapping, at least.

I had an original...the first real quality knife I ever had in fact. Looking forward to see if I could adjust to the CRKT version before committing.

If you were worried about the knife being slippery, you could use some "Gator Grip" in the handle divot and on the sides of the handle. Gator Grip comes in a can and you paint it on with a brush. I'm going to try some on a khukuri handle when I get a chance. For the price, I'm going to get a sting.

Looks like a shiv I'd have no proper use for. I prefer single edged boot knives like a good sgian dubh. 99% of the time, their "backup" function is going to be cutting a fishing line, opening a package, or some other utilitarian task. If I'm skeered the boogeyman's after me, the boogeyman best be wearing his bulletproof vest. ;)

Sarge

I gotta agree with Sarge. Rather have an SD.

I also remember the Ahern series and the hero's Python, CAR-15, Detonics .45, and Russell Sting 1A. The series was fun escapism but had lots of gun BS in it if you ask me (like that legend about the correct/incorrect way to load a .45 mag.) I was involved in early IPSC and there was so much ridiculous hogwash that came up about stuff to bolt onto your 1911 and how to use it that just isn't a factor with new models anymore. Meanwhile, $2000 wasted dollars later... but I digress.

This new one is actually supposed to use some decent 1050 steel, and way cheaper than their folding sting which runs $145. Of course those have titanium handles and use 154CM steel. Anyone know what steel the originals used?

Still the best boot knife I ever owned was a 4" double edged G96 aluminum handled belt and boot knife by Jet-Aer corp. Great quality, and hand sharpened by my Dad on my 24th Birthday. Still hands down my sharpest knife.

I loved the original Sting. Dad and I visited with AG Russell back in '76 (and I got to play with his two Rodesian Ridgebacks). Wal bought one of the Stings if my memory serves me right... don't know what happened to it though. It isn't in the collection I got from him when he passed.

I don't remember exactly what the original steel was, other than it was a combination of soft/hard steel to give it strength (don't know if this was a two steel combo or tempering... like I said, my memory is shot). It was pretty special back then though.

The blade length is legal in Texas, but not the double edge. Agree with Sarge, can't beat the SD.

Had a Sting that I bought way back when and I used as a sgain dubh with my highland wear. The new one in nowhere near as nice as the one that I had.
