Hi friends,

This forum in particular covers the latest trends and builds in Handmade knives. Here's an opportunity to pull out, admire, clean, and show pieces you've had for a while, and ought to be seen once again.

I hope this thread will resurrect itself back to the top often.

This isn't a photo contest. Just do your best. We'd just as soon see the knives and hear WHY you bought/ordered/acquired this piece, and why it appealed to you.

••••

I think I ordered this piece from Larry Davidson back around 2002. We were both members of an email list for knife lovers, and I liked his styles.

Larry is a VERY talented machinist, and could make a great auto. I loved the curves and flow of his folders, as well as the roller bearing pivot. It's a covert dual-action auto. That button pops the top!

I asked him to make me this folder, and my vision was a taste of high tech, with old world materials. I asked him to insert the carbon fiber inlay, into mammoth ivory scales. It is a juxtaposition, and provided me with a high tech ancient tool. Both areas cover in design and visual.

I'm proud to show it again. I still carry and use it lightly.

What can you bring to this thread?

Coop

Good thread, Coop!

Here are a couple classics from Tony Bose. And the man himself, when he and Joe (Canineforge) visited my shop last summer :D

Sadly I no longer own the Prunner, but I do carry the small Sawback often.

Here's a classic Bailey Bradshaw from my collection - Grapes of Wrath II:

And an older Russ Andrews piece that still blows me away with its gorgeous stag and sublime blade finish:

A Dan Farr competition cutter that gets reposted every so often in chopper-related threads, but definitely a classic in my collection:

Bob Lay, a long time Canadian maker, made this knife a long time ago.

I got it from this guy in my town about 6 1/2 years ago who has an antique shop, basically filled with stuff he's collected for 30 some years. He has a pretty huge inventory of knives, a lot of them aren't in great shape, and neither was this one really. But at least he didn't try 'refinishing' it:rolleyes:

My knowledge of custom knives at that point was almost nil, although I've been into knives a good while. But when I picked it up, it just felt so awesome! I traded some bicycle repairs and accessories for it. It's scabrous and all that, but it's a beautiful design, relatively well put together and it's the knife that got me to this place. Wherever this is.

I still have it and always will.

PS. Don, love your pictures man!

Here's a few for y'all:

Here are a couple of really old Hanson's (before his sex change :D):

Don's friendship brought me into the custom knife world, and after he completed my first custom knife order for me in 2005, I had a chance to pick up some of his pre-Sunfish Forge pieces. Don had the 'eye' from day one.

Couple more:

Joe Kious/Ron Knott auto - sadly, the last knife Ron ever engraved

great stuff!

This one was the first handmade puukko I owned, made by Joonas Kallioniemi. I was smitten from the first moment I saw his wares -- clean, minimalistic lines, yet the quality of his work was evident. I was not disappointed; like all good makers his stuff is even better in hand than they are in pictures.

Beautiful knife... but the sheath.. I am smitten. That little up curve at the tip and the construction for the blade portion... wow. Is it a wood core construction?

Great pictures everyone and thanks for the thread idea Coop!

Okay, I play. A few years back I completely switched from fixed blades to folders. Here are a few examples of the fixed bladess I used to own. Some of them still hurt to look at because they're gone.

There are all stunning, but Marcel, man! You sure had some premier fixed blades. Just out of this world.

This is a group of Steketee damascus knives that I purchased over time quite a few years back. One of my favorite knives is the interpretation of the Puma White Hunter.

When I first began attending shows, the stag and damascus had a sort of rustic look that appealed to me.

This one came from a friend I met here and then met in person at a hammer in. He helped me forge my first knife. When my mom needed a cane after some back surgery he made one for her. Just incredible work with wire inlay in curly maple of irises.

I asked him to make me a period style pipe hawk and Mark's results speak for themselves.

This next one is by Bailey Bradshaw. We had been friends for years and I had a number of fixed blades and traditional slipjoints he had made for me over the years.
At blade about 10 or 11 years ago, he had gotten his hands on the Sheffield Exhibition Knives Book. We sat down together and he had the thought of building a whittler based on one of the Rogers knives pictured. I think he ended up making three. One in stag one in checkered pearl and this one with over 80 pique pins and forged 52100 blades.

Vince and Grace have been friends for years and I have not seen any of his work that did not get me going. A while back I asked him to make a dagger for me. No instructions. This was the result and I could not be happier with it.
Evans_Dagger-web1.jpg

All these were the work of friends. I knew their work well enough to just turn them loose with little if any thoughts on what I was looking for.
