im not sure if this is really the right place to post this, but ive always wondered if there is a guide, if you will, to determining what style a knife is. by style, i mean hunter, bowie, fighter, etc. are there distinguishing characteristics that allow the classification of these styles? or is it more of a "i know it when i see it" deal?

Once you are familiar, most styles are immediately identifiable. Others are not.

Terms such as hunter, bowie, and fighter are easily distinguishable from each other, but include many different styles and variations.

yea, i am able to tell what type a knife is, but right now its more of a "i know it when i see it" type deal. and there have been a few that were classified as one type that i figured would be another. im basically just looking for a more definitive set of characteristics...if they actually exist

The reason you will think that a knife is one style when you see it called another is that there seems to be a lot of latitude given to certain styles. Bowies are probably the worst for this. I have seen any knife with a clip point labeled as a bowie. Knives like the Becker BK9 are often referred to as bowies, when they look more like a bush knife/machete to me. I don't think you would be able to get enough of a consensus of opinion to be able to classify the style of every knife.
