claw hatchet hang - can you help?

Hello,

Been trying to hang a small claw hatchet on a cut down haft. Luckily I started with a lot of extra handle, because this is my fist attempt hanging a head with lugs. It seems no matter how I rasp, when I go to set the head it shifts, so that the toe slides inwards and upwards (towards the haft) and the heel turns outwards and upwards (away from the haft). I've tried rasping opposite points; rasping way down below only the front of the axe; doing the same but on a diagonal... Nothing quite works even though the lug beneath the back of the eye is making contact and the front is not. I can get it close, but the heel always ends up further out than the toe.

Any suggestions? After a couple of hours I'm finally running out of handle to work with!

Thanks,

wdmn

Is the handle completely filling the eye (front to back), or are there any gaps? If the handle is a little small, maybe a well-fitted wedge will tighten things up enough, if you can keep the head in the proper orientation during the wedging process?

Good suggestion. And maybe fill any voids with construction adhesive prior to wedging.

Another option is just to start over with a fresh handle. Riggers hatchet handles fit claw hatchets nicely.
