Clay coat quench or: Can you dig that Forge.

Neat. But the real question is: Will that temp controller actually work well as a pyrometer?

Yes, been using mine just for reading temp for a couple of years.I like the alloy probes from Omega. Finally got a selenoid and soon as I can get a relay I will actually try to use it as a controller on the heat treat drum.
I found the stock pots are a little thin for forges Sweany.;)

I'm about to start building a forge, and was wondering about adding some sort of temperature monitor... how long do these sensors hold up, and where in the forge should they be mounted? Should they be dipped in Satanite to keep them alive longer in there?

My Son and I picked up one of these small heat controllers but we are at a lose to figure out how to program it. I have the instructions for programing it but they are like starting a book in the middle. What I need is the basic idea of where to start -- like push button "A" untill you get a reading then push button "B" untill something else happens.
Any one know if there is something one the web that starts in the begining???

I am just now beginning to understand my controller.Basically you have power going to the controller to power it.You then have your input terminal where the probe hooks. Then according to the controller you have you have outputs that sends a signal to a logic board or standard relay to control the gas valve. My controller does logic or standard outputs. Some advertised Ive seen lately does either one or the other. The SSR or relay output is what we need to controll a forge.make sure the relay you use is rated for the output voltage and a snubber circuit which involves a resistor and capacitor which prolongs the life of the controller.Dont try to understand the whole operating manual at once.I'd pick mine up everytime I thougth about even heat.
The omegaclad probes are bad Arsh probes.Get the 1/4" diameter and it should last a very long time providing you dont over abuse it at its top reading cap or allow it to contact welding flux or stick it in a slag rich smelter:)

i dunno if the stock pots would be too thin, they are a bit thicker than those freon cans.

I got a stock pot that's slated for low temp salts on my turkey fryer. :D :D
