I have benn forging knives for a good while and wanted to try some new stuff. Were can I get this Satinite for clay quenching? Or the furnace cement if it works just the same. All I know is I can"t find it at Lowes. Marlin
I like this Site!

I bought my furnace cement at a small ace hardware store. Check out the little hardware stores in old neighborhoods, they might have it.

Menards carries pint containers of 2700 degree refractory cement for $3.99. The knife I used it on has a slight hamon. Be forewarned, the most common problem is putting it on too thick. 1/8" is thick enough, and it's been advised to coat the whole blade with a thin coat to prevent HT decarb, scale, whatever. I didn't use it on any other knives because Matt Gregory was kind enough to give me a few ounces of satanite. The remainder of the cement was used to make my shop buddy, Jobu!

Wow, great shop buddy.

Having used mostly Satanite, and then having tried Rutland's furnace cement, I wholeheartedly recommend the former- Rutland's wants to swell up and fall off your blade unless bone dry. And I find it harder to remove after the quench. Satanite can be put in the forge wet or dry (damp doesn't work as well) and comes off easily in my experience.
