Beatiful, clean blade. "Nice work" seems like saying, "Chilly in here" when standing in a walk in freezer. Please post a couple of pics once she's dressed, love to see the finished piece.

Great looking blade & a good steel.
Thanks for sharing.

Thats some mighty fine work. Crisp grinds and a clean finish. The completed knife should bbe a beauty. What handle material did the buyer ask for?

It will be blued wrought iron for the guard and fittings. Water buff ferule. we are still discussing the handle material. Fred

Excellent grinds, and I love the quench lines. They show up really well for 52100.
Hi Keith, Since I started using borax over the top of the clay, the temper lines, on all the steels I use, have become more distinct. As the temp of the steel gets up around 800 or so I dust the clay coating on the blade with borax , making sure to get it in the seam, were the future hamon will be. I use just enough, borax, to seal the seam, but not so much that I leave "globs " of borax on the blade surface. They affect the quench. I started getting the three hardness zones after imploying this technique, along with the more distinct hamons. The lower carbon steels, done this way, look like the line was put on with a sharpie.
I love to experment in the knife shop. Thanks for your feedback, Fred

Nice looking blade. Needs a nickel silver single guard and a nice round piece of Sambar stag. :)

wow - What grits did you use to make that false edge?

Fred... any updates on this fine bowie? Would love to see some pics if so.
I just finished a couple of orders that were pending and can now fosus on this blade. I will post photos as it is coming together. Thanks for your interest, Fred

I shape the false edge with round files, where the radias starts. I clamp the blade in a jig so I can reproduce the angle on both sides.
Moving out to the tip I use the 2x72. I make an attempt to remove any imperfections along the false edge before I harden. I am down to 800 grit or so at the finish. One technique I use to get this "look", is, after the etch, I put the blade back in the oven and complete the temper cycle. If I am going to temper for six hours, I will save 2 of those hours for when the blade is complete. It seems to give the surface of the steel a "warm glow".
Sorry if I rambled on here, Fred :thumbup:
