I smeared some hardware store refractory on the back of an O-1 blade and tried to draw those purty lines down to the edge. Heated to not magnetic and quenched in warm oil files sliped of the edge and bit the back but when I etched it the temper line was straight. I am assuming I put on too much refractory in the stripes. Is that right? It shouldnt hurt to try again should it?

Thanks

Lynn

O1 has about a 10 second time period to get from the nonmagnetic temperature to the temperature at which it starts to form martinsite. This will cause the line to be straight. The part of the blade that reached critical temperature will be the area that got hard. In order for the blade to have a wavy temper line, you will probably need to heat it very quickly to keep the rest of the blade from reaching critical temperatures. Another possible way is to have the edge in a heat absorbing material and draw the back down to the material. I haven't tried it personally but it looks like it should work??
