I am curious as to what the difference is in the helicopter and fanning? I am on the intermediate level now. I tell ya swinging this thing is so fun. I have only been bitten about 3 times. Its funny I have a 1/2 serrated blade and it actually looks like bite marks when it happens. I also think I made up a new one, kindof a variation on the Front Grip backhand switch. I had another technique question, but cant remember it now, so it can wait until later.

Ok, the Helicopter drills are circles that travel on the horizontal plane, parallel with say...... the floor. The exercise works primarily on the Index and Middle fingers, and Thumb (forward grip) executing the "screwdriver" type motion to keep the handle (and blade) rotating around. In the backhand grip it's the Ring finger, Pinky and Thumb interacting.

Fanning, on the other hand is done vertically and is usually much faster. The motion resembles a Fan blade rotating in front of you. It works more on your ability to let the handle spin freely within your palm, yet at the same time it's held firmly in place. Sounds strange, but once you get the hang of it, you'll know what I mean.
